That's the goal - first, to stop this bloody civil war in which everyone living there are losers, and second: to start a democratic process in which people in Donbass and other regions should get an opportunity to think and decide about their future in relatively normal conditions. Not only Mariupol but whole bunch of other towns, now far out of the rebels' reach, may then easily join. Peacefully. Isn't that something we should be all striving for?

I think you are daydreaming. Kiev will allow no such referendum to take place in the Donbass region. And don't think that the ceasefire is a permanent one. The Ukrainian army is regrouping and re-organizing itself, to attack the cities of Donetsk and Lugansk. During the past few days, they have received massive supplies of armaments from Poland and Canada. Just wait for a few days more and Poroshenko will show you his true color.

The war has been started by Turchinov and Yatsenuk and its the fact, they didnt any negotiations. 4 candidates of presidents declared a war to Donbass,

Yes, but it's different now. ATO has been defeated. Thousands died. Hundreds of thousand are refugees. Destruction is immense. Majority of 'loyal' Ukrainians refused to take part in what more and more of them are calling a fratricide. Economic situation is rapidly worsening. Some important lessons have been learned, and the time for negotiations has come. This won't be an easy process, but it's still better than to wage a war which no one can possibly win.

Paya is right he is a "little" radical, at war its a good, I think, to have 1 strong position.

P.S. I watched for him since April. Since Slavyansk, Gorlovka and Kramatorsk.

Updated
2Paya 80-90% of Donbass people (2 regions Donetsk and Luhansk) do not like and do not understands new government they want to be free, but noone wants a war, some ppl can tolerate it and another part - cant. Too radical? He was removed because he couldn't be bribed. Kremlin wanted to end the war in Donbass, as many of the stooges were having their bank accounts frozen. Strelkov was given the orders, but he refused to obey. He wanted to liberate Mariupol in particular, which is home to the strongest partisan movement in the region.

In my humble opinion, both parties (regime in Kiev and rebels) were overstretched and needed a break from war - hopefully a permanent one. I don't think that rebels had enough strenght to liberate Mariupol, at least not without huge losses -that's including local civilian population- which was totally unacceptable.

Look. Kiev failed to defeat the uprising, and rebels failed to free more than (roughly) 1/3 of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions combined. Rebels also failed to gain massive active support outside of the territories they are holding. It is pretty obvious that ethnic Russians and Russian-oriented Ukrainians in the south-east aren't very interested to take arms and fight (same as Ukrainians loyal to Kiev aren't, just look at that joke called 'mobilization'). But people will give their vote to Novorossiya - be it federal, confederal or independent.

In military sense, Strelkov's contribution is immeasurably valuable but his political views eventually became too radical, that's the first reason why he had to be removed. Both Donbass and Russia seek for peaceful democratic solution through negotiations, which is hard to achieve with guys like him. Other reason was the fact that he is a Russian citizen - idea of independent or (con)federal republic of Novorossiya demands that locals should take over all responsibility.

Without him, Novorussia would have been history by now. Even when his forces were outnumbered by as much as six to one, he was able to defeat the Kiev forces. But in the end Putin and Zakharchenko cheated him and other NAF military leaders by declaring the ceasefire. Else, he would have captured the city of Mariupol by now.
