That was really a great news because there will be no more fear of getting caught specially for those people who wants to play gambling but being restricted due to the law residing in their place of Ohio.

The passing of the bill would benefit both the government and the people for sure because mutually people will get to enjoy sports betting due to government's support to this implementation and government can also benefit from the taxes that can be gained on this gambling game (because legal gambling games pays taxes to the government).

Hope that people will be responsible enough so that the government will not get into a change of mind towards the passing of the bill allowing the legalization of sports betting in Ohio.

Good news for US casinos I guess, thanks for sharing;) This is actually probably down to a lot of the existing blockchain lobbyists who have been very persistent, but I think the online gambling stats during lockdown really showed the state government that they were losing out big if they didn't say yes!

Winding down.
$23 million is already a big amount not too mention those people employed and will be employed on the gambling market, no wonder it generated a big number of votes favoring this law, this is indeed good news to Ohians because they have an industry that will add revenue to their coffer.

Yes, that is a good news and it will certainly help to the economy. That is very much needed now after the pandemic so any push in that direction is good.
To be honest, I didn't even know that sport betting was illegal there and I can't understand why it was so but I'm sure this new law will also create positive effects, although some probably think that is not good for the society.

Probably because they see the risk for their people, but now they have open their mind that sports betting is a big industry and that it would here to increase their revenue. The world is struggling now, big country and small country, we are all affected by the virus and we never know when this pandemic will be over, without another source of income from the government, that will result to economic crisis, and at this time, people needs the government and in order for the government to help people, they need to have enough funds and this is one way to help that.

See I do think that as long as people are doing it legally and are not engaging in illegal activities , they should have the freedom to spend their money as they want.

In my country , it is not legal , but apparently my Teacher used to take money from the students and parents and have his own business regarding that 😂 .

Government cannot control everything .
People can very easily bet even if it is not legal . Legalization would actually be beneficial for the government if they want to track the people and their activities.

It would bring Transparency in the section.

Not to mention it would also protect the people betting and the one's placing the bets by the laws .

Since a lot of people are losing jobs nowadays, this kind of law can really help those people to get job and make money. This is indeed a good news to those people who loves to do sports betting, now they don't need to hide from the State anymore. People should not abuse this law so they can freely do the sports betting without any problem.

Legalization of sports bets in Ohio is very good news, especially when you hear only bad news from everywhere.
A good news for the gamblers and those who are seeking for a job, but yeah the bad news is everywhere especially in US there's so much tension.

It is a bill that could become law later this year if Ohio senators fully endorse it. And it would become the next state to offer legal provider of sports betting services.

Interested in knowing more about the states that offer legal sports betting services in the USA.

What about those countries where gambling is illegal? Will such countries categorise as well as consider sports betting as a different and somewhat responsible way of gambling and legalize it at their own place? It ain't no easy task considering that even US took this longer to come up with such decision.

Not all would really be that equal in terms of government decisions if you do try to compare US to smaller countries. It doesnt really have the difference yet they can make their own laws and prohibitions as they like.

No one can tell if when they would give out that consideration and totally open up gambling industry to operate into their vicinity. It all matters with their decisions and they might changed up their minds now specially
into this current condition and they do know the possible benefits that it can give out if they would decide to open doors.

Why do you believe that other countries' governments (small countries I'm talking about) would allow gambling during this pandemic situation when they know that people are out of money and are even taking moratorium on loans to extend their repayment dates, when they know that they are helping people by sending some specified amounts in their local currencies to their citizens' bank accounts from the government treasuries? Do you think they'd allow people to probably gamble and lose all that money that they got from the government itself for their own welfare during this situation?

Here on my country they do already re-open these gambling places/casinos in spite of being a poor country because they do hope that they can able to extract out taxation into these businesses. You got the point though where people arent really that much into playing because of the crisis but not for those people who do have deep wallets or pockets which means they can still potentially get some customers amidst of this pandemic which do basically means that they can still taxed in.Other places might have the same decisions too because it wont be feasible if they would held up for too long specially on poor countries.

Better late then never, reminds me of modern prohibition where some will go ahead anyway and theres no real point to barring the public from a normal activity which gambling is.   It introduces more competition so I'm not sure its good news for all exactly but its probably the best for the state overall to allow.   Probably a good thing even for sports itself as there is some possibility of sponsorship and advertising revenue that was previously not possible.

This is a landmark decision, there are a lot of people who are involved in sports gambling. so far, we have been doing it illegally, I think all countries should legalize sports gambling, because sports gambling is popular all over the world and government also can earn a huge amount of tax from it. I know there are some Disadvantage too, sports gambling often involves match-fixing, because of this the game and the players lose their own individuality. But remember there are some dishonest people involved in all sectors, they should be suppressed, we just want to enjoy the game and gamble on it.

nothing wrong in sports betting/ gambling itself but there can be for the people who hold or operate it   . match fixing is considered as cheating same as scamming  . those kind must be bust and closed but others that operates in a legit way should be legalize  .

its not what you calll a disadvantage but the real disadvantage on here on gambling is when people loose thier money and got addicted but that can still be manageable or can be controlled  .

You are right and its just no sense if they would open or make it legal this time to those smaller countries which arent really that much capable
for its citizens to spend up money on playing games instead on buying their own food for them to survive. For big countries then they can
possibly make such decision but for small countries then that wont really be into their priority because they do know that it isnt really
that helping at all.

Sports betting still falls into the category of gambling, I don't know what's the reason why it wasn't legalize before but if other countries have legalize sports betting, then I guess there is nothing wrong for them legalize it, this is an income generating approval, why would it take so long to legalize sports betting.

Well, I might be bias as I am a fan, I usually gamble in sports more than any other games in the crypto space.

I'll end this post with a question too, what if China will legalize sports betting? Would that make their economy better?

Furthermore I don’t understand why are people against this bill, because gamblers will always continue to gamble, but by making sports betting legal the state will earn additional revenue, which can further be used for the state’s development in the long run.

Usually the people who are against on opening up the casinos, sports betting, and other forms of gambling are those who are active on religious sector.
I don't think religion is considered as a good contributor in the economic growth of such society?
Nevertheless, any forms of gambling will help cope up with the economic damage caused by the pandemic today. Assuming more than half of the population in a specific area are regular and casual gamblers.

However, one of the main reason that some governments are looking into when allowing gambling activities, is the risks of further spread of the virus.
Most governments nowadays is in the middle of uncertainty. Whether they tighten the national health security or salvaging the economic state of the country.

That remains a tentative decision which will take effect once they made their final conclusions about that concerns. However, the government is very tight on their laws, so it need perfect time before everything will become successful particular with gambling. This is really a serious cases nowadays since pandemic is still a major concerns of the authority.

I think other states will follow.I can think that they have done it because the Coronavirus totally destroyed the US economy where unemployment rate is in the highest level since November 1982 which was the previous peak. Now the governments are looking to revive the economy in every possible way including legalizing gambling.

That's my theory too, it's very timely so we can only think that it's related to effect of the current situation.
It's just sports betting but sports betting is a big industry and I think majority of big bettors are betting on sports, and as this industry is growing, it would also result to a positive impact on a certain country's economy.

Like I said, they are a billion dollars industry.

Good news for sports betting fans from Ohio, but it is a pity that it is still in a COVID-19 pandemic. So not all sports are running again yet,
with the good news at least for sports betting fans there will be no more problems with law. Looking at the world sports news, some sports
will start again in June. This will make enthusiastic for sports betting fans.

The house of Ohio has passed a bill in which it has declared sports betting as legal in Ohio, and in my personal opinion this shall benefit all the gamblers who reside in Ohio, because now they can gamble legally without fearing any arrests or any kind of fine.

It’s also pertinent to note that there’re few organisations that are against this bill, hence we will have to wait and see if they’ll challenge it in the court or no.

Furthermore I don’t understand why are people against this bill, because gamblers will always continue to gamble, but by making sports betting legal the state will earn additional revenue, which can further be used for the state’s development in the long run.

Quote

The Ohio House on Thursday voted 83-10 in favor of a bill that would place sports betting under the oversight of the Ohio Lottery Commission and allow Ohioans 21 or older to gamble on collegiate and pro sports either online or in casinos, racinos or veterans and fraternal halls.

Quote

It is opposed by Citizens for Community Values, Bowling Centers Association of Ohio, the Cincinnati Reds, and the PGA. Ohio public and private universities have also expressed reservations about legalizing betting on collegiate sports.

Quote

The Legislative Service Commission estimates the tax would generate $17.7 million in 2022 and $23 million in future years.

I don’t understand why are people against this bill,

Many people "subconsciously" link betting to gambling due to language, culture, movies, programming, etc. Unfortunately they are doing it hypocritically without probably realizing that gambling is widespread in societies, not necessarily in the betting world. You can bet in sport without gambling... doing it more that is morally required becomes gambling.

It's morally right for government to ban "sport gambling" but not morally right to ban "safe/good sports-betting". Gambling is gambling...should not be encouraged

It's good that they've signed it, it's better to tax gambling than prosecuting them when it will continue to operate because there is a market for gambling in every country, men are like that, they will always find a way, even in underground or in a secluded place, just tax them we have a saying if you can beat them join them or tax them.

I'm shocked that Ohio back then makes sports gambling illegal? I mean, all gambling games makes huge income not only for the customers but also for anyone who owns one. Government can even put some taxes in every sports bet they make and put huge taxes on places that those betting games would take place. Since it's just a bill, i hope it would soon be law, indicating sports betting legalities.

They should have done this a long time ago, they are like refusing taxes coming from the sportsbook, so now maybe they feel the need to raise their revenue due to the pandemic, so they decided to approve sports betting as their option.
I was wondering about this as well. The effect of the pandemic to their economy could have played a role in their decision.

There is a big market for gambling in this country.
Per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio, they have a total population of 11,689,100 updated in 2019.

So imagine, if at least 500 thousand people are potential gamblers, that would bring big money to the casinos, I'm assuming that gamblers will lose.

Maybe religion, morality, and other values. The bill states 21 years of age and above though, bettors of that age should be able to think well for themselves. Opposition to legalizing the betting on collegiate sports seems valid to me. Throwing away games which is supposed to be for fun, friendship, and school pride could become more rampant because of this.

Expect for opposites because each bill that would be approved or signed then there would really be those who are against on such decisions but since this one had been finalized then its understandable that this one had gone through many debates and revoking it will always depend into those law makers. When it comes to economic benefit aspects then making this legal will surely have that impact but people who are against with the bill does really have that in mind to have concern into his fellow citizens yet we know on how this do affect and we know on how gambling addiction do mess up ones life but its too late for any argumentations or whatsoever. Good thing for those gamblers who do reside into that country yet they wont really be minding much about legal aspects since its already been an approved bill.

It is a bill that must be approved. Ohio residents who make sports bets have to travel 20 minutes across the Indiana border. All of this income is kept outside of Ohio, which could well go into state funds. The Senate version is to impose a 6.25% tax on sports betting proceeds that would go to the Ohio State Fund. With this bill everyone wins in my opinion.

https://www.cleveland.com/open/2020/05/ohio-house-passes-bill-legalizing-sports-betting.html

They are just realizing now the losses of revenue for all those years that had gone by. Gamblers or bettors will always be there, so they will just find a place where it is legal for them and that is the advantage of states that have legal call on sports betting. They should have done that a long time ago. But still good development for all those sportsbook and gamblers in Ohio.

Yes, it is great news for sports bettor from Ohio because now, they can play betting in the sports by legally, and they don't have to bet by secretly. I guess why people against this bill is because they are afraid that many people will play gambling using sports betting. At this pandemic, many people lost their job, and they need money to survive, and if sports betting legalize, that can make people will try to use sports betting to make money. At the other side, the country will get more income or revenue, but many people can become gamblers, or even they will become addicted gamblers to sports betting.

Perhaps, there will be regulations that can control who can play sports betting and who cannot play so people who allow placing the bets in the sports betting will know about that, and they can obey the rule.

People will not reject, it's already final, they have approve it and gamblers are already celebrating right now.
People will only oppose if it's bad for the majority, like it will destroy the resources, creates unemployment, but it's not, in fact it will help increase the revenue on taxes.

Expected news after Supreme Court decision to legalize sports betting.
All states should take the necessary steps to fully legalize sports betting, but it is only a matter of time before all states do so.
Why are people against this bill?
There will always be people who are against betting for crime related to this business, and the fact is that in order for someone to get money most others have to lose

Betting and gambling takes place irrespective of it is legal or not. So it is better for the governments to legalize the betting's so as to collect the taxes form its revenue.

^ I am positive that other states even other countries will follow Ohio's footsteps for this time of pandemic economy is suffering too like its citizen for them to cope with the idea of legalizing sports betting could help uplift the economy again. It is normal that some sectors of the society will oppose the bill for they were born and grown up that gambling and sports betting is illegal and they get used to it. However, freedom is what gamblers need for they will no longer be required to hide because of penalties or fines when caught and the mere fact they are doing such things people who are against gambling are not aware that gamblers do pay taxes and contribute to the economy as well. With this movement of Ohio, it will definitely serve as an eye-opener to everyone that instead of making these gamblers indict it would be better to see them as an aid to the severely ill economy.

Well, that was a good for them.
The legalization of sports betting in Ohio will bring more positive things in return both for the citizens and to the economy if the tax that will be generated from this will be used to the right program of the government. Aside from the fact that gamblers will have the freedom they can now help hoist the economy again. And for whatever reason, --the government still made the right decision because I am sure they have their own objective in passing the bill because it will be the economy that will benefit the most. Indeed, making sports betting legal in Ohio will set as an example to others that instead of prosecuting the gamblers make them contribute in the recovery of the economy which I am hoping that the idea will also be adopted by every country around the globe.

Good news for those who love sports and want to make bets but can't do it due to the law. Although it's a good sign for sports bettors, due to the threat of COVID-19, some sports events were canceled and postponed. They still can't fully enjoy the legalization of sports betting. Perhaps, they can just enjoy it when the pandemic is over, and the quarantine is lifted.

Great news for Ohio gamblers. They now have the chance to show support to their favorite sports team with their money.

I don't know why sports betting is not allowed there while gambling is actually open. Sports betting is very much unlike those other gambling casino games which could make you lose money very quickly.
I also don't get it why they don't allow sports betting in the first place while the casino is legal. Also according to the article, they'll earn a 10% tax and that tax revenue will be directed to K-12 Education, which is good for them. But what matters is they can now have fun with sports betting, especially after the pandemic.

They should have done this a long time ago, they are like refusing taxes coming from the sportsbook, so now maybe they feel the need to raise their revenue due to the pandemic, so they decided to approve sports betting as their option.

it's still a good news though, as a gambler, I really pity those people who hiding when they are gambling because they are doing it illegally.
now, we will see these people getting the freedom to gamble while at the same time this will help the gambling industry to be profitable.

Furthermore I don’t understand why are people against this bill...
I guess that the bowling center fears that it will lose revenue as some of its members will now substitute the bowling alleys with casinos.
But I totally agree with you. Just make it legal. You get rid of the illegal elements + the state owns tax revenues. Since when did illegal gambling/weed/prostitution stop anyone from doing what he wants. Lets not kid ourselves. Look at Colorado.

It is opposed by Citizens for Community Values, Bowling Centers Association of Ohio, the Cincinnati Reds, and the PGA. Ohio public and private universities have also expressed reservations about legalizing betting on collegiate sports.

The Legislative Service Commission estimates the tax would generate $17.7 million in 2022 and $23 million in future years.
