I always thought of that but never brought it up, I would like to see that.

I wouldn't like to see this implemented. Forums have their place. We are not Reddit.

I really dislike the idea of showing scores that are universal across the board, as it discourages controversial viewpoints and creates a need for more moderation. A true web of trust would be good, though it could not be a replacement for fixing the moderation system.

Scores do not necessarily discourage controversial viewpoints. Someone offering a good expression of an opinion held by a small minority can easily score far higher than someone repeating stuff people have heard before. Tp achieve this, it is important here to make voting limited (e.g. one upvote per user per day).

if it really should not work we can still get rid of it. without downvoting I do not think there will be any problem.

upvoting is a really good idea. However, I think it would be better to allow weighted upvoting. I would give the upvotes of users whose posts are often upvoted extra weight. Weighting should be based on a geometric average of the users' average number of upvotes per post and the users' total number of upvotes.

For example, upvote weight = (average upvotes per post)^0.9 * (total number of upvotes)^0.1
The opinions of users without any upvotes would be given zero weight.

this sure would be nice but not necessary to start

Ya, I agree weighting is 'nice but not necessary'

I like it. I think elimination of the signature saves space and makes the threads more readable.
that really was not the point - signatures are superb.

I simply do not have the time to read through 100 posts every day to find the jewels.

I think this would be a good thing. Quite a few boards have a "Thank user for this post" feature.

we need this:

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1890

I know the last attempt on an applaud / smite system failed badly. That was because it was user based not post based and because it allowed down votes.

I am not sure if it is possible to disallow downvotes with this mod. Anyway, it seems a lot better than the previous one and we should give it a try.
