I have not seen an increase while mining sha256 (btc). I have seen an increase while mining scrypt (ltc). Depending on the card when mining with scrypt the memory sped can be pretty picky though, higher doesn't always mean a better hash rate, even if its 100% stable. On my 6950 with unlocked shaders a memory speed of 1325 vs 1250got me 10-15KHs I think, so I'm at ~510KHs which percentage wise is small, even smaller for other gpus that dont have as many shaders probably.

EDIT: I read this too quickly, thought you were talking about the memory speed not the available memory. I would imagine that 512mb and above is okay since MSI AB and GPU-Z dont say I use that much when I mine scrypt. I would be careful though, if your buying a card with under 1GB of memory it may not be GDDR5, might be GDDR3 which is definitely slower.

Does the amount memory on a graphics card affect it's hash rate? ie. would the same card with 2gig do the more than with 1gig, 512meg?
