Thanks for all the info.

My current choice is between rx 470 8gb and rx 480 4gb, with the rx 470 being about 15 euro per piece more expensive.

rX 480 IS 7000 MHZ vram and rx 470 is 6700 (practicaly the same).

Do you have an opinion between the two?

I would go for the RX480 8 GB cards, which is what I was referring to in my above post. They are probably going to be more money yet, but in addition to the memory you will also have increased memory bandwidth (speed) which usually has a positive effect on hash-rate even for algorithms that do not need 8 GB. AMD has a new line coming out next month RX570/580's which are basically re-brands of the current versions, but it might drive down the price of the current generation.

ZERO requires a GPU with a minimum of 8GB to mine.  https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/ann-zero-fork-of-zcash-with-harder-mining-params-1796036

There will probably be more of these types of high memory requirement coins in the future and it probably is not a bad idea to grab 8GB cards if you can as they typically have faster memory and will usually retain a higher resale value.

I used to feel the sweet-spot was the 4 GB cards and indeed have many, but recently I have been buying more and more of the 8GB versions. I have no regrets buying the 4GB versions early on as most of them have now reached ROI and are still making money off Zcash, ETH and the many clones, but as I said earlier, I think the 8GB cards will be needed in the future for the newer coins.

Isn't the Eth dag size just barely over 2gb? It looks to me like 4gb will be fine for years
Until now 4gb is ok, but i am talking about longterm , i don't think 4gb will be fine for years , technology is moving fast , there is already a coin that you can't mine with less than 8gb memory it's a new coin but who knows maybe some day you will stuck with this 4gb in a few coins like 2gb cards now....

Which coin is this? is it ZEC? is it really not minable without 8gb?
No it's not zcash but it's using same algo equihash with modifications , i can't remember the coin name sorry Smiley, but you can search it in the ANN section, you can mine zec with 4gb.

I am in the process of building a rig, is there any GPU algo that may require more than 4gb VRAM?

In short I am looking if there is any reason to Prefer RX480/470 with 8gb ram over cheaper 4gb ones
You should go for the 8gb ver. If you want to mine Eth for long time because the dag file getting larger , also for equihash algo 8gb will be better , you should go for rx480 8gb.

Really? I think the 470 4gb vs 480 8gb is quite a big price difference and the 470 is also more effective, so it will almost never pay off to pay more for the 480 8gb. I am just basing this on my own calculations and my energy price.
You are right , 470 4gb was better than 480 8gb but that is not the condition now ,Eth mining needs more than 4gb if you want to eth mine for longterm , also for equihash(zec) the amount of processing power is limited with the gpu memory , so i mean if you will buy now better go for the 8gb and if you will buy 8gb then better go for 480 , by the way i have alot of 470 4gb and i am a step away of roi , but if i am going to setup a new rig now i will go for 480 8gb, the key in mining is to keep up with the increasing network difficulty and hashrate. Thats my opinion
