I heard that GPU and CPU mining is dead for Bitcoin. But, can I mine other crypto ? I heard that Ethereum is good to mine.
In your opinion, what crypto is the best for mining right now ?
And what hardware should I use for beginner ? Can I use Bitcoin's hardware ?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, because I'm  newbie.

You can still mine BTC using your CPU and GPU but you'll get crap results because of the way, way too high difficulty.

You can still mine other Altcoins as you mentioned but you will not get good results if you only on your CPU and old GPU, unless its a new coin that will be lunch and its algorithm is CryptoNight.

if you say about bitcoin then its not profitable again unless you have big hashrate to mining bitcoin. without this, you can not make profit in daily. but if you want to mining ethereum then i think you can make profit but like i say before, you still need big hashrate so you can make profit in every coins you want to mining. you can start with video card like gtx 1050ti and build mining rig like many threads on here and you must calculate your electricity fee because this is important to know the fee so you can calculate how much you should earn to cover your fee in a month.

Yes! GPU mining is dead! Difficulty too high! Stay away (Make it easier for me to find blocks!!)  Grin Grin

Its main objective is to return the mining ability to ordinary users with capable gpu's. Looks like coins that have an equihash algo, now blooms on the cryptoworld.

Ive not read this before, they intend to hard fork Bitcoin and return gpu mining to globally distributed miners not just centralised pools and factories ?    Interesting idea but efficiency is an important part to transaction costs and Im not sure if that will be superior overall to justify any success.  I agree with wider distribution generally but I had thought POS would be the standard to do that for the common people more then a return to gpu mining

Yes that's right. If you check http://btcgpu.org/ / decentralization description, it's stated there that ASIC's will be obsolete in terms of mining BTG and prioritizes GPU's.
Yeah there's still a small restriction for people to get this coin, and those who only have good gpu's can mine it. Well, on the other side if we consider POS, I think it's almost the same to the point that POS requires a sum of amount to start staking (people need to purchase if they don't have any) while on BTG you will be required to have GPU.

CPU mining not profitable but you can make some profit from GPU mining. I don't want to give wrong info but difficulty rising day by day.

you can see eth diffuculty from here : https://etherscan.io/chart/difficulty

i have GTX 1060 6GB x2. When i start mining (april 2017) i was took 2 eth in month (eth was 50$) approx 100$

in June i took 1.3 eth (eth was 350$) approx 450 $

Now if continue to farm ill take 0.2 eth in month (eth 330$) approx 66 $

i paid 20 $ for electricity every month.

GPU mining isn't dead it still very much alive in altcoins

I agree with Liammullen. Also, there will be an upcoming addition to the list that GPU's can mine and it's the Bitcoin Gold (BTG).
It's a planned hardfork of bitcoin which will happen on the 25th of this month (so be sure to stack your btc on your own controlled bitcoin address, just in case it "truly happen"). Its main objective is to return the mining ability to ordinary users with capable gpu's. Looks like coins that have an equihash algo, now blooms on the cryptoworld.

There are many coins you can mine with GPU and some for CPUs as well.  You just have to be sure to mine what you think will rise in value later or use whattomine.com to see what is the most profitable and mine that.  If you want to take the guess work out you can just use nicehash and have the coin chosen for you and be paid in BTC for a little extra fees.  Its all up to you but there are many options out there to look to into it just takes awhile 12-14 months usually to get ROI.

1. GPU mining of Ethash algo coins is more profitable than bitcoin mining in term of per kwh consumption;
2. GPU mining of Equihash algo coins is more profitable than bitcoin mining in term of per kwh consumption;
3. There are no ASIS for Ethash algo Equihash algo coins for now, and there will not be in the near furture;

As previosly mentioned, start with nicehash.com, once you fully understand you can take a look into whattomine.com

GPU will be still profitable but you need to pick up your altcoins carefully. It is not like the old times in which no matter what coin you were mining you earned lots of money.

For other coins like etherium, GPU mining is still profitable. And most importantly there are many other coin that you can mine!

GPU mining will be here for a while. But I don't think CPU mining will be profitable for the average user for too long, because of bots and website mining scripts, like the one ThePirateBay is using to mine Monero with the CPU of users visiting their website.

Start from here: https://www.nicehash.com/profitability-calculator

1 : You must know the altcoin you want mine ex: Ethereum (ETH)
2 : find the most profitable GPU for ETH ex: AMD RX 500 Series
3 : Compute your Electrical Consumption Versus Profitability
4 : Compute you ROI
5 : Research for your Hardware setup and possible suppliers (Motherboard, PSU, Risers, GPU)
6 : Research for your mining software setup (Windows OS, Linux OS, ethOS, Simple mIning OS etc..)
7 : Assemble your RIG and start mining

Note: Bitcoin miners (hardware) can only mine SHA 256 algo.
PS: Study and research here at bitcointalk  Smiley it will help you a lot
