So i want to buy a Nvidia rtx 3090, could someone tell me if it matters which type you buy if you also want to mine altcoins with it? Or give some tips?

If you want to buy a RTX 3090 be aware that it consumes a lot of power. If you mine ETH it consumes around 290W at 121 MH/s so if you want to have a mining rig with 6 X RTX 3090 then you'll need to buy at least 2 PSU of 1300 W so it's much more expensive.

Compare to that, you can have 6 X RTX 3070 with only one 1300W PSU because each 3070 consumes around 115W at 62 MH/s on Ethash.

Also considering presently (May 21th) you can get a RTX 3070 on Ebay around 1,575 USD and for the
RTX 3090 it's more around 3,975 USD - 4,150 USD.

So as you can see the RTX 3090 is more than twice the price of the RTX 3070 but in fact on Ethash the RTX 3090 is (in average) not more than twice the hash rate of the 3070. So in my opinion the RTX 3070 is a better investment to mine ETH also the efficiency (hashrate per watt) is better with the RTX 3070. Here's a link to the topic I started about that on bitcointalk:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?333931.0

except he can buy a 3090 now.  my card is set to 284 watts and does 113 mh steady quiet and easy

this is the 2 of them

What do you mean philipma1957 when you wrote : "except he can buy a 3090 now?".
You can buy RTX 3090 and RTX 3070 now on Ebay or Amazon except the price are crazy for the RTX 3090.

Furthermore your RTX3090 does 113 mh which is not even half of the average 62.37 mh for the RTX3070.

He is in europe and stated he could get a 3090 right now. At a decent price.

He did not mention he has access to 3070 gear.

So he was asking If people thought it would be okay to get it.

personally I think it was an okay deal for him.

Not good not great but okay.

The listing he linked was from a retail seller so he would get full warranty. and it is the exact same evga I have which I know does 113 endlessly with out an issue.

That is what I meant. I do agree with you that in a world where he gets 2x 3070  for 1300 euros each the same 2600 euros that would be better off assuming the seller is legit and he gets a warranty.

But he never mentioned he had access to 2x 3070 pieces for 1300 each.

Okay got you!

thnx for the replies,

Well I was trying to get my hands on a rtx 3080 for cyberpunk 2077 since december 2020. So that was the main purpose for e new gfx card. But since the 3060/3070/3080 are hard to come by and the 3090 are in stock in my country i decided to buy a 3090 and also use it for mining now and then (at least that is my idea), its just trial and error for me for the mining part.

I want to buy this one:

https://www.alternate.nl/EVGA/GeForce-RTX-3090-FTW3-ULTRA-GAMING-grafische-kaart/html/product/1673531

OR

https://www.alternate.nl/INNO3D/GeForce-RTX-3090-iChill-Frostbite-grafische-kaart/html/product/1693868

The calculation about energy costs and hashing power and the avarage profits you can take, ive alleady calculated it generally for myzelf.

The question was more about does it really matter which 3090 you are going to buy If u want to mine (X)coins, are there any technical differences between those 3090 card in mining profability or cant you really go wrong with buying 1 of these 3090's anyways.

And a new powersupply (1000W) is going to be bought as well..
Don't buy a water-cooled graphics card.
This purchase will add even more additional costs to the water cooling system.
€ 2.899,00 Huh did you calculate the payback of this video card before buying?
For example, I have the opportunity to buy this video card, maybe even a little cheaper, I have money and inexpensive electricity, but I do not buy it

Buy 2 ETH (i don´t know how much a RTX 3090 cost) for this 2 RTX 3090 makes more sense. The real roi if you calculate it right in ETH, because he will mine ETH, is around 400 - 500 days. Hashrate go up, ETH rewards go down (EIP1559), you must pay electricity and so on.

You must calculate with the coin you will mine, calculating in $ makes not so much sense.
If you bought 2 ETH you have only 2 ETH. If you bought GPU and mine - you have GPU and some quantity of ETH. If ETH will go to the moon you will go to the moon in any way. But if ETH dumps to nothing - the second way you still have GPU.

Note I am not selling anything!

This btc section not alt coins

I asked mods to move it to alt coins.

A 2 card 3090 rig designed for mining ETH earns about 22-25usd a day

it burns about 625 watts an hour or just about 16 k-watts a day.

If you have

5 cent power 80 cents in cost   profit  of 21-24 a day
10 cent power $1.60                  profit of  19-22 a day
15 cent power $2.40                  profit of  18-21 a day
20 cent power $3.20                  profit of  17-20 a day

I own a 2 card rig with 4 years and 6 months on the warranty

I am not selling it but that if I were to sell it and transfer the warranty to the next owner

I would expect serious coin 4k would not be enough.
Likely 5k

this is the card I own

https://www.ebay.com/itm/164876221737?

he wants 3400 or best offer for 1 so say he takes 3200 tax is 200 you pay 3400

 2 would be 6800

the mobo

the psu

the usb stick for os

the ram  come to 300 or so

you are pushing 7100 supposedly new may or may not have a warranty

If I were to sell mine with a warranty for 5k btc or etc or ltc payment only

you would save 2100

either deal is risky as a price collapse and you are burnt.

I got mine in jan so I earned back a lot already but I am not out of the woods yet.  I paid 4000 for the 2 cards and 300 for the build or 4300.

I am trying to give you a feel for cost. I am not selling my rig

also I do not know a thing about that ebay seller he had the best buy it now price.

My only tip is good luck.  There is going to be a whole lot of competition going for these cards.  I'd feel pretty safe in saying that I'd buy as many as I could possibly get my hands on at MSRP and I'm not even a big GPU miner.

You can "want" a GPU, but I'm not sure that's a reason to create a thread.  I'm sure everyone else on this forum wants a GPU as well, but we're all mostly lacking in the ability to get our hands on them.

If anyone does have tips on where these bad boys are available, I'd love to be proven wrong and end up with one myself.
