Undervolting can reduce consumption as much as 50W so def worth a try.  Here are some links to review that may be helpful:

http://www.cryptobadger.com  (has some links to guides and info regarding undervolting)

http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/vbe7-vbios-editor-for-radeon-hd-7000-series-cards.189089/page-18

These links reference 7000 series a lot but also include some 2xx and 280x specific info

What are the power difference?
50W reduction from what stating point? 250W to 200W ?

I just started and have a few of the MSI 280x but have not jumped in on this myself, yet. This blog has details for undervolting the card... http://rumorscity.com/2013/12/20/radeon-r9-280x-litecoin-mining-and-sweet-spot-for-700khashsec-part-2/

Also, you can try Trixx. Some of the MSI 280x can be undervolted using that tool (mine cannot.) https://www.sapphireselectclub.com/ssc/TriXX/
Nevermind, saw you're using Linux.

I've read that the power consumption can go by over 40W per card, by under-volting them. On a rig that is to run 24/7, that will translate into significant power savings.

However, my biggest concern is whether or not I'll be able to safely run 4 280x cards on a 1200W PSU. In some places, I've read that a 280x at full power will not take more than 250W, but in other places, I've read that they can consume as much as 400W each. :-/

Hey everyone,

I'm currently building a GPU mining rig with two MSI R9 280x cards, and was wondering if anyone here knows how to under-volt them?

I'll be running them on a linux system, so I can't use the utilities provided by MSI.

I will eventually add two more cards to this rig, so I need to reduce the power-draw per card. I'm putting a 1200W PSU on this rig.

Looking forward to your replies.

Cheers!

I was curious about your power budget. How much power are you planing to save per card by undervoltage them?
