While there has been some doom and gloom regarding the future of GPU's, buried in the noise there are some positive things:

1) While a lot of people are dumping on the hirocoin and its use of X11, measurements indicate that the GPU power consumption while mining is cut in half.

2) The mythical "Stilt" bios for the R9 290, 290X AMD cards. Reports indicate a 10% to 15% increase in hash rate with the adoption of this experimental bios: https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=12830.0

3) The roughly 3X increase in has rate while mining the hirocoin.

So roughly for 11 Mh/s of mining, the hirocoin takes about 800W.

Unfortunately, there is more money behind pushing new hardware as opposed to upgrading the hardware in place.

So the unknowns for GPU life extension at this point are:

1) Is there a GPU hashing process which minimizes power consumption while maximizing hash rate? Could it even be more efficient than an ASIC?

2) How much is possible though a GPU bios optimized for mining only? To get even wackier, is some sort of daughter board solution possible to speed up a GPU?

3) Is there any upside to a redesigned cgminer 3.7.2?
