heres a laptop that is better and costs like 20 or 30 more than the cheapest netbook

Yeah, but that wouldn't be anywhere near as portable and the cheapest Atom netbooks are more like $200 or less if you go refurbished. The 8.9" models were pretty darn portable but nobody seems to make them any more.

i don't know much about tablets, but if one were to have a real intel or amd cpu, and ran a normal desktop version of windows, that would be awesome. then that would be around 200-250. i think windows 8 will run on arm if i recall correctly.

edit

oh yehhhh  Cool

kick ass.

Official Bitcoin client cannot run on ARM due to wxWidget GUI
 ...
Ram is not a problem. I can run bitcoind even on Nokia N900 (ARM Cortex-A8)

I think bitcoind is "official", and it is a fully working client, I have never used the GUI version.

256 MB (as in the N900) is enough for bitcoind, but not very good for extended use IMHO. I have one running on a 256 MB ARM server, and it uses about 400 MB of virtual memory. I used to have a 128 MB ARM server as well, and while it could run bitcoind, it used to swap a lot. I also have a feeling that bitcoind was somewhat leaner at the time (about a year ago).

Command line use on a smaller device is harder, but the main problem is entering the address, which you need in a GUI as well. Of course, you can use copy/paste in both kinds of client.

You just have to remember to never leave it inserted for too long (or it could get infected or hacked) and hope that no-one cares enough to write BIOS resident malware...

The cheap computer either would be connected all the time or would have the same problem. Same with hackable BIOS.

Nothing is 100% guaranteed in this world, not even the love of a mother. All you can do is make it very very difficult. By having a bootable usb that connects at very ocasional and random times and maybe from different computers, you are making your bitcoins extremely difficult to steal. You can even have your savings distributed among different usb wallets since usb are so cheap to avoid losing it all in the extremely rare case that something happens, and making it even less appealing to try to hack you because the reward would be inferior.

A bootable usb is even cheaper.

Two years later there are cheap Androids that do the same for less.

Okay Debbie Downer, sheesh!  Find me a new Android device with a 7" screen and (almost) full size keyboard without a phone contract.

Examples?

PD: In DealExtreme there are many of these devices with ARM and Windows CE for less than US$100, can use Android and some Linux distros.

I mean really... people pay $80 for a leather wallet. Here's a freakin' laptop for that price! This thing was made for Bitcoin.
