It's a coin being used as a test-bed for MimbleWimble i.e. for Bitcoin tech. Nothing else nothing more.

It has other features that might benefit itself differently than bitcoin. This is arguable, however, Grin's monetary policy can be viewed as a trial on longterm sustainable mining.

Grin was fun to mine about a year ago, and I liked it for it's privacy features.  Now that it's known to be a less private than originally thought it just feels like another altcoin, but one that's kind of a pain in the ass to use.  The MimbleWimble protocol still has scalability and efficiency features that are worth building on.

Are there any forks of the Grin yet? If it has some usable features there will probably someone want to improve it.

₿uy / $ell ..oeleo ;(
I would have never thought that the Bitcoin forum would start accepting Altcoins for payments related to the forum. Afaik, transactions involving the forum were so far being completed solely with the use of BTC.

Then you will be more surprised to know that theymos is actually supporting one other altcoin, - the best altcoins out there and made a lot of people rich. He posted the ANN thread in the altcoins section himself as the only BitcoinTalk-endorsed ICO, just check it out. There are many surprising things happening on the forum.

Sorry guys, I had to do it.

So, what is the reason of this alt then?

I don't know.
What is the reason for any altcoin?

People obviously tried to make a privacy coin, and I give them credit for trying.

Any privacy offered by Grin is pure delusion and nothing more.

No one says that Grin is really the most anonymous coin but it really offers good privacy protection.

No it does not.
It is NOT offering any privacy protection.
Any privacy offered by Grin is pure delusion and nothing more.

All post by Theymos or anyone else are old news and past tense.

As we now know that Grin and mimble-wimble is not really private as people was thinking,
I am not really sure how long will Grin be supported in bitcointalk.

Theymos talks himself about Grin's privacy:

Monero = CT + stealth addresses + ring signatures. Grin = CT + "stealth addresses" + mimblewimble. Because grin replaces ring signatures with mimblewimble, its privacy is less reliable than Monero's. Probably the grin developers have tried to make their mimblewimble transaction aggregation methods good, but I currently wouldn't put much faith in it, and IMO it'll take many years of research to get something really solid. That said, CT + stealth addresses offer a certain base level of privacy, and grin's method of handling stealth addresses (using an interactive protocol, exchanging "slates") is both more scalable than Monero and probably more private.

If your goal is to mix coins, grin is definitely not for you right now, and it may never be. Monero's goal is maximal privacy, regardless of the cost. Grin's goal is excellent privacy, consistent with scaling.

Grin caught his attention from the very beginning. Here is a little story about this: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.49556346

I think it worth to have a look at this thread too: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/theymoss-list-of-altcoins-with-some-technical-merit-2095328

I was just browsing through the options for upgrading to copper member today, and noticed this:

Do we know since when Grin started being an option to pay for copper membership? And what's the rationale behind accepting it?

Edit: small correction in the title.
