You shared a way to eliminate spam on the forum but on the other hand, you negate it by saying blah blah blah (can't quote it. I'm on mobile Cheesy).

So what is your point here then?? Another newbie user hoping that somebody will give him merit to his "wall of words" post.

I don't think the spam only comes from signature campaign but most of the spam are coming from that campaign. Well the new merit system helped lessen the spam a bit. I know theymos will make another step to reduce spam.

I guess you are right, eliminating all the signatures will eliminate most of the spam (except of ANN-bumping). But I don't think this is a good solution for the forum. Because it's necessary for the forum to be an important platform where third parties are willing to place their ads, because Bitcointalk has also costs. And the signature campaigns bring clicks. Bitcointalk needs these clicks to be attractive for placing an ad of third parties.

No one will pay for an ad on a website, that has no visibility (clicks).
That's not an issue. BitcoinTalk has at least 500BTC being held by OgNasty (escrow).

I don't think money is an issue for theymos. But spam on the other side?
A vital financial basis should be in the first line and I don't know the numbers of money being earned by advertisements from third parties on this forum, but I think if these 500 BTC are decreasing slowly this can also result in a long-term problem.
I'm not sure if I remember it correctly, but it was said before that the payment of Mods is relatively low compared to their work they have to do. And I think it was also said some Mods do it for free.

I agree there should be measures against spam, but I doubt this will happen to endanger income sources of this forum.

Hell yeah. People are so ungrateful for what they have in this forum that they just want more and more, thus they keep spamming the forum.

What do you think will happen if the spam doesn't stop and theymos just give up on putting passive measures in place? Right now, merit was only created because he likes how people from other places of the world can get a few bucks in here while contributing with the forum. But if this doesn't stop, there is a huge chance he will just ban all signatures all at once.
Respectfully, I doubt that theymos will remove all signatures. I'm not a friend of restrictions, but there are far more possible than we have right now.

Here is a guaranteed way to eliminate almost all forum spam. Simply don't allow signatures for any forum member. The majority of all posts made on the entire forum are entirely for the purpose of completing bounty signature requirements. Guess what, legendary members can spam too, not just newbies. Eliminate all signatures and you eliminate all spam posts. It takes away the reason to do mass postings every week. However this will never happen, because guess what? The owners of this forum benefit from all of this posting because it increases their number of visitors and therefor ad revenue. The owners probably make a really hefty amount of money from all of their ad revenue. If they take away signatures, ad revenue would drop significantly. So there you have it.

Captain obvious everybody. Did you guys know that Bitcointalk is profitable for Theymos Shocked who knew!? Signature advertising is one of the major features of this forum, and is a key differentiator in what separates it from other similar forums, why would Theymos do something to jeapordize the success of the forum? This is a home for blockchain and cryptocurrencies, yes signature advertising is a major feature here, but it is also a repository of information, creativity and problem solving that you will struggle to find elsewhere, don't let your narrow perception blind you to this.

I know you are angry because you can't follow the signature bounty,

a long time ago this forum was still free from spam and the content in this forum was average it was useful, and in the past there was no system merit, if you see legendary spam, you can report it to the moderator,
This new policy is used to protect the bounties program, because I also see a lot of JR members only posting spam, and if it is left it will be dangerous in next future for bounties programs and also dangerous for bitcoin forums because it contains post spam and is not useful, so I strongly agree with theymos about this new policy https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/security-bounties-309785 I hope the contents of the bitcoin forum post will be useful again as before.

All these adds around here all the time, they must be making a killing..
Oh, what adds?

Cryptocurrency benefit from all of this posting because it increases their number of visitors and newcomers to cryptocurrency.

But it's gone a little too far, and is being reigned back..

I feel most people in this forum needs a incentive to post sadly, so it isn't going to happen.

Though this would probably happen for JR Members in the future, until they actually have to reach 10 merits to have a signature.
