The Guardian has a long tradition in the UK going all the way back to the Suez crisis and beyond - it is well respected, even amongst its adversaries, for its [editorial and] journalistic integrity.
Before the advent of the dissemination of information via the internet it was seen as one of the few places [in the UK] where a view of the world could be presented that was independent of corporate/vested interest.
For many, including Edward Snowden, it is still today seen as such a place.

Can only agree with the above sentiments.
Where were the Guardian when more credible NSA whistleblowers were trying to publicise their findings throughout the 2000's? All the theatrics of secret police indiscriminately smashing hard drives just made the whole thing worse, pure tabloid level trash. Sounds like the sort of embellishment your local alcoholic would make up. They're basically reporting a story where they say "It turns out that, in an indirect way, we're total heroes".
Now they've got a special badge to prove it, great work guys.
