Hi there. I know this is a dead post as it has no replies in a long time. Yet I might as well try it. I have a couple of sp30's with some Issues and can't seem to find an answer to repair them.

First, 2 of the miners don't seem to load correctly. I start them up, PSU's and fans start and sound all right, yet there is no response from the leds in the front panel (the "ready" and "info" LEDS) and it doesn't appear to connect with my network. Tried doing a SD recovery, but I have no way of telling if it's even trying to restore, as I have no access to GUI or anything.

I have another miner that shows a red LED in the back (PSU's) when I plug it in. Yet I know the PSU's are allright, as I've tried them in a working miner and they work fine.

If anyone has an idea or hint on how to look, I'd appreciate it A LOT!.

Where did you find firmware 2.7.1?  I'd like a copy please.  I'm using 2.6.14 but it doesn't seem able to get full operation out of the device, with one chip disabled i'm only getting 3.7 Th/s and it should be more like 4.3.  If you'd like a copy of 2.6.14 let me know and I'll find the link, maybe it would help to have it around.

Hi,  thanks for your suggestions. I think my SP30 is dying or is death already. Just had another recovery session. It started pretty well with 3.5TH/s but then it gradually slowed down due to ASIC's being shoot down one after another. I'm afraid the software i have is so basic that you can't switch any chips or anything like that. That's why I would like to update it, but my system doesn't offer the option " load from the file". I know newer FIRMWARE's have this as a standard.

Strange thing is, that the miner ran for at least 30 - 60min and it didn't submit any work to the pool or, pool didn't received any. Even so, the pool has recognised the hashing rates - any suggestions?

About the firmware and other files I've have found them in the topic: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=521520.14380. I recommend you to check if it's really SP30 firmware

Cheers

Hi all!!

New user here, pretty green as well. Hope the topic is still alive.

Guys, how can I upgrade the firmware manually on SP30? currently have very old one with limited options to play, have the copy of 2.7.1 downloaded just Know How is missing . I'm looking to upgrade as my CGminer is restarting every 2 mins. Hopefully the upgrade will help.

Cheers

Hello, I'm using an SP30 here, it's also my first miner.  A couple things I found that might help:

Try to run it on 220v.

Try to run each power supply on separate circuits.

Make sure you're using a suitable cord.  If the cord gets warm after operation, it's not heavy enough, get a thicker one.

Don't run any other devices on those circuits if you can avoid it.

Remove and reinsert each power supply, make sure it's in there well.

Make sure your 'restart if hash rate falls below' setting is 0

Look at the ASIC Stats page during start up to see if any of them act strange, like they suddenly switch to 1280 mhz just before it reboots.

Go into the ASIC settings and disable all of them.   Restart miner, then turn on one at a time and restart miner between each, give it about 5-10 minutes, if it has a problem with one, leave that one 'disabled' (but not 'removed').

Where did you find firmware 2.7.1?  I'd like a copy please.  I'm using 2.6.14 but it doesn't seem able to get full operation out of the device, with one chip disabled i'm only getting 3.7 Th/s and it should be more like 4.3.  If you'd like a copy of 2.6.14 let me know and I'll find the link, maybe it would help to have it around.

i have problems with my sp30, i bought it recently used but the event log shows alot of errors, one of them is LOOP 9 failed, and other things, i will copy the event and you can see...

i dont understand nothing there please help what do i need

So chips 21 and 27 is causing problems which makes all the chips on loop 9 misbehave. Go to ASIC control, disable chip 27 and see if you still have problems. If you do, its probably a controller issue.

thank for your answer, i disabled the chip 21 27 and 28 and it solved the problem completely, hashing 4.15 th right now,

can you give me a clue how to fix the disabled chips?i mean its possible to fix? i would wish to set my sp30 to max performance!

If you've not fiddled with voltages too much then the answer is no, they're likely dead. Trying to run with even slightly non-performing chips apparently messes up the auto calibration as well.

Anyone running an SP30 with one of the hashboards completely removed?  Is this feasible if one board becomes badly compromised?
I didn't have any problems trying it, although its simpler to simply disable all the loops on the bad board unless its terribly damaged, and then you could try removing the PSU - hashboard electrical connection plate thing to depower the board.

My 3 questions:
1) My SP30 is mining @4.5Th/s turbo mode, 3100Watts on the wall. After changing the overclocking settings from "turbo fans, highest rate" to "medium fans, high rate", mining speed and wattage remains the same! Is this normal?
2) In my miner's firmware upgrade page, it says
Code:
Current firmware version: 2.5.64
Latest available firmware version:
So it does not display information for latest firmware. Anyone know what version is the latest and where to find it, since my miner can't? (dont know why)
3) Should I open the miner case and use vacuum cleaner to clean up the dirt?

1) Doesn't sound right, it should underclock.
2) I can't remember if firmware versions remained constant, if so then 2.6.14 or so is the latest stable. You can email them to get a manual file.
3) You're not going to have much buildup in an SP30 but you can if you want.

Ok I successfully upgraded to firmware version 2.6.14 (for some reason it was not displayed). I selected medium settings, I was getting around 4.45Th/s, slightly lower that turbo mode, around 3kW on the wall.
I feel that one should prefer medium settings over turbo mode, it doesn't push the ASICs/PSUs to the limits and will make the miner last longer. 50Gh/s is not much after all now.

Still doesn't sound like its changing sufficiently, medium settings should be quite a way from turbo. Can you upload some screenshots?

Here's my screenshot, medium settings

The SP30 compensation should have been completed.
The SP31 compensation will take few more weeks - it's ongoing.
Most of the SP20 delay compensation (BTCs) was done.

The site says 2x1200watt power supplies and it's drawing 1500w from the wall.  But here is the kicker.. It says 3000w nominal power.  So does this machine operate at 2400w or 3000w at any given time?  Thanks

The machine will operate at 3000W. The PSUs can do 1200W, but they can be overclocked by 10% which would make them run at ~1320W. This is the power they feed to the chips. The power that they will draw will be 1500W per PSU.

Gotcha!  Thanks -  so a vanilla out of box sp30/31 will only draw 1200w per pus from the wall.  With OC 1500w?

No. The PSUs supply 2600W to the unit, but require up to 3000W from the wall in order to provide that power. They're about 90% efficient.

3000W wall usage
400W PSU inefficiency
2600W SP30 usage

Good stuff - thank you!

If it is the same (size wise and PSU) how did they end up proposing a 5.5 TH/s compared to 4.5?

By forcing the little chips to work under pressure. Usually the performance increases with the experience gained .. heh.

No. There was a manufacturing blip with the first batches of chips causing them to underperform. The SP31 has this removed.

Although I do not have this miner I find that your guides are always thorough and easy to understand. Keep up the good work!

Oh, and do you get any of these machines for testing purposes or do you have to buy them out of pocket?

Its a mixture, this one was purchased.

Dogie,  do you have an order in for the SP31?  How is your overall satisfaction with the SP30?  Was shipping on time?  I pre-ordered SP31.   Looking forward to the 5.5 TH/s.

SP30 was fine, but too loud as expected. I don't believe in the race for power density when there are so many tradeoffs for no real gain. Stick it in a 4U case, give us quieter and cheaper PSUs and everyone is a winner. SP31 is no different to SP30 so I don't have an order.

I'm not dogie and I don't have any SP30, but I'm very tempted to order 2 x SP31. So far Spondoolies-Tech makes a solid impression, they are fast on replying inquiries, the CEO (Guy) participates here on bitcointalk and answers inquiries himself as well. You even could fly to Tel Aviv, drive to their facility and pick-up a unit by yourself (though you would have to pay 18% Israeli VAT which you would have to let refund once leaving the country).

Of course I'm worried about the long time it takes to have a SP31 shipped, so this is no easy decision at all.

Exactly my thoughts as well except I will not be flying to Tel Aviv Wink

Can this unit be turned off and on easily? For example, can the power be turned off and on without issue during a power outage or just because you wanted it off for a couple hours? Would you need to initialize anything and set it up again, or would it seamlessly start where it left off? Thanks!

Sure,  I don't see why not.
I don´t see any major problems with that, but the question arises: Why would you want to periodically turn a 4.5TH miner off?

Booting is done in less than a minute, and if you had a pool entered before the power went off, it will continue mining to that pool.

Simply put, there is no advantage of getting any of these miners into Europe.

You get cheaper hosting outside Europe than what you woul pay for electricty alone, never mind VAT.

If you are a VAT registered company, you reclaim the VAT on the hardware anyway. $300 is a small price to pay for control of your investment.

Have a look at the hosting comparison thread (under service discussions), you will find that you can get hosting for as cheap as 0.1$/kWh on 6 month contracts.

how much money did it cost to you to import it in EU shipping + charge taxs + customs ?
I don't know if that is directed at me, but I did decide against the SP30, simply because it's way easier to resell a bunch of used Antminer S3 second hand than one SP30.

Shipping on one SP30 to Europe is 300 USD, afaik there are no custom charges, but you will have to pay import VAT for sure (that depends the regular VAT rate of your country).

Where do you live in Europe? It is very likely that there are hosting options available that are in fact cheaper than hosting it at your house. Additional VAT charges that apply when importing into Europe would also not need to be paid.

I'm here in Austria, VAT in not an issue (I can let our company purchase and run the hardware), and despite the fact that the lowest energy price I can get here at 0.11 EUR/kWh (excl. VAT) all calculations indicate so far that I'm better off with self-hosting.
There are good hosting solutions available starting at 0.07€/kWh, feel free to pm me if you need any infos.

Does anyone know if it is possible to connect a SP30 to a three-phase 400V/50Hz power output common here in Europe (the voltage is in fact 3 x 240V and not 400V, but such a power connection is called like that).

I've just checked, all our regular 240V circuit breakers are only 13A, so I would need two separate circuits to run one SP30, whereas the three-phase 400V circuit has a 16A breaker, which would fit the bill, but I'm unsure it it's possible to use only two phases (2 x 240V) causing an asymmetric load.

Any idea on that matter?

Micro SD allows the unit to 'auto' update from firmware file on an mSD, serial allows 'force fed' update. I believe USB is/was intended for beta wifi dongle but its not ready yet.

Hello Dogie,

Two questions regarding the SP30:

Does it bring power cables?
Does it bring an ethernet cable?
Are the mounting ears robust enough?

Thx

No power or ethernet cables (hence they're in the what you need to get started section), mounting ears are fine. There are two rear stabilisers as well and SP30s aren't that heavy due to being 2U.

Although I do not have this miner I find that your guides are always thorough and easy to understand. Keep up the good work!

Oh, and do you get any of these machines for testing purposes or do you have to buy them out of pocket?

Its a mixture, this one was purchased.

The fans are quite powerful for 80mm at 100cfm

Thanks for the info... Glad to see Spondoolies went with the high end fans. I don't need to think about upgrading those...

Thanks for your comments on Fluid Dynamics as well Dogie...

I've dropped chip temps in several different miners 20 to 30 deg. C just by upgrading the fans that they came with with the same ambient temp...

Any info on the fans in the SP30? model#?
If you are asking because of noise, the PSU fans are what creates most of the noise in these units.

The sp30 is a little less loud than the sp10, and the sound quality is very different, it is less of a high-pitched whine.

This. I couldn't remove one of the fans without removing all the ASIC boards, but the fan noise of the actual unit is literally irrelevant unless you ram them up to 100% for which there is no need at all.

I have found that miners never have the best CFM fans for their particular size. I'm not worried about noise. More concerned about performance. Average CFM for 80 mm fans seems to be in the 50's range. I have found 80mm fans with significantly higher CFM... I guess i'll inquire with Spondoolies. Thanks for trying...

They'll be way, way, higher. But CFM isn't everything, you need to read up about some fluid dynamics and pumps.

There are two metrics, both equally important but they trade off each other. Pressure (or head/static pressure) and CFM (flow rate or similar). Server fans require a significant static pressure in order to overcome the large tunnel of air in front of them, its not as simple as thrashing about as much air as possible.

If you were unhappy with the noise from a SP10 is it pretty safe to assume you will still be unhappy with a SP30 in warm ambient temps?

Not necessarily, its close enough that it will very much depend on who you're worried about being unhappy with the noise. It will really come down to your specific situation, and whether you can close doors etc.
Any chance you could post an audio clip of the unit hashing? Perhaps a comparison of the 2?

I no longer have either unit, but I've specifically removed all reference to noise levels in terms of dba ratings and any records from new guides. Its too subjective, and dba levels just don't represent the actual noise that you end up with. Two miners @ 55 dba can sound and behave totally different.

I could also record the SP10 on my phone, and on my camera and on my headset, then play them back to you. They'd sound totally different. Similarly, depending on how you play them back, they'd sound very different.

I was planning on using two separate outlets on different breakers thats not a problem running the numbers honestly running an SP30 at 4.1 TH at 2600WATT actually

running the numbers provides a better hash/Watt number than 4.5 TH at 2900WATT, not sure what all the big deal with maxizing the hash ratio to all ends is.  Hash/Watt

is what matters in the end.

If you already have 2 circuits installed, then just buy the cables with the correct ends, and you should be good to go.  Honestly though, even at 3kW, you're not to go over 12-13A @240v, which is perfectly safe on a 20A circuit.

Find the plug that matches your recepticles:

http://smile.amazon.com/SF-Cable-NEMA-L6-20P-250V/dp/B009ZERV72

http://smile.amazon.com/6-20P-Power-Cord-Adapter-Foot/dp/B00H7JR636/

This one already has 2xC13, so you'd be good to go.
http://smile.amazon.com/L6-30P-C13-Splitter-Power-Cable/dp/B00BGAEBNU/

And of course you can easily get C13-C14 extension cables wherever (online...Don't expect to find them at Ace Hardware).  Though I would be sure to get those cables rated for 250v & at least 15-20A.

As to the W/Hash ratio, that is what matters "in the end" only so much as you are talking end of life of your hardware.  As RoadStress said after the difficulty is >70B.  Until then, maximize your hash rate as much as you safely can.

Thanks a lot for this info and no I don't have the plugs yet I figure I can grab a 30AMP plug from home depot or something. I Initially planned on getting two new 30AMP

circuits installed  for $700  but with with the lesser hash rate than I expected on the SP30 (4.5TH vs close to 6TH) I decided to pass on those until I am able to purchase a

second sp30 or some S3s.   For now  I was planning on stealing from 30A 240V my dryer during uses the week and then on Saturday when the dyer is in use I have a

couple of 20AMP 120V outlets on separate breakers to power the SP30 until Sunday when the 30AMP 240V circuit is available again.

Thanks as well RoadStress for the that info on the diffuclity.  Btw are we projected to reach 70Bill around April of next year ?

@marvell1

That is a misconception.

What matters is $/GH and operational costs aka $/GH/m.

Increasing the hashrate lowers $/GH and can lead to a faster ROI, especially if your $/GH/m is low (aka 5ct/kW/h including hosting).

hmm thanks for the information I might have to rethink things then

Just look at the difference between your numbers:
Quote from: Marvell1
at 4.1 TH at 2600WATT actually running the numbers provides a better hash/Watt number than 4.5 TH at 2900WATT

you gain 400GH @ an extra cost of 300W.  That's still only 0.75W/GH, which, unless you have some crazy expensive electricity/hosting rates, is worth mining for a long time to come.

You are wrong here. For the moment you are better running it at full speed and at max unit's W/GH/s. I plan to switch it to 4Th/s at 2.3kW at ~70 bil diff.

The power cord you recommend  :
SF Cable, 10ft 16 AWG Universal Power Cord - IEC320 C13 to NEMA 5-15P SJT 13A

http://www.sfcable.com/P7C16-10.html

this looks like a regular PC power supply power cord , comes standard with my 1300Watt PSUs ?
is'nt this only for 110v?

what cord would be needed to run this miner off a 200-240 Amp receptable ? would you need a PDU ?

You'd need a cord that goes from whatever kind of recepticle you have (6-20p L6-20p or L6-30p would be common but not the only options) to C13.  However since it has two PSU's, you'd need a splitter, which might be difficult to find with enough amp rating, or you'd need a PDU.

First image does not seem an actual picture as it does have ears and does not match the other front side pictures in your post.

All the top models get airbrushed    Grin

First image is their CAD rendering as mine didn't come out right. New location has different lighting so I've ordered some more lighting to compensate. The only difference is the actual SP30 doesn't use full cover heatsinks and the true color is silvery like the SP10.

Nice guide Dogie   Wink
How does the noise compare to the sp10 when the sp30 is at 4.5TH?
What amp rated power leads would you recommend?

The noise on the SP30 is purely determined by the PSUs, rather than 'mostly' on the SP10. It is lower and lower pitched even compared to the SP10 in quiet mode.

If you're running at 110V you're going to need at least /YThgjF]13A cables.

Sounds promising. I will be running 230V

It does. However I'm also not sure at what point we scrap beauty and density to get rid of the bottleneck for these chips which is power/heat heat/power. They have so much headroom if we could get them more power, noise levels could be brought down magnitudes if we could use different PSUs and cooling could be increased significantly if we went to 3U.

0a) What to Expect (top)
SpondooliesTech's SP30 utilises 30 of their latest 28nm RockerBox ASICs to create a hugely powerful 4.5TH unit. Two hashing boards are combined in a
dense, 2U case along with 2x1U, 1.2KW power supplies. A custom controller is included internally.

Chips30x 28nm SpondooliesTech RockerBox
Hashrate~4500GH
Rated Voltage12V
Rated Current235A
Power.Consumption~2800W

0b) What You Need (top)
You will need a few accessories to get started.

Click your flag to find everything you need to get started at Amazon!

1) Powering (top)
SP30s come with either 2x Emerson DS1200 or Murata D1U3CS-1300F-12 server PSUs with 34 pin outputs. This means you can NOT replace them with a
conventional PSU. They both come in a 1U formfactor, are rated for 1.2KW and are 90%+ efficient.

2) Cooling (top)
Four 80mm fans are used in a negative pressure tunnel arrangement in order to exhaust hot air and replace it with cool, fresh air in one sweep. The topside of
the chips are cooled by custom aluminium finned heatsinks, individually fastened through the PCBs.

Noise levels are determined solely by the PSUs' fans, which in turn are determined by ambient temperatures and maximum PSU loads. Noise levels at 4TH are
noticeably lower than at 4.5TH.

3) Case (top)
The SP30's case is 2U thick (88.9mm) and is designed to be rack-mountable in a 19" wide rack (482.6mm), or stacked. Mounting ears are included and come
screwed in from the factory. The shipped weight of a SP30 is 16kg, dimensions of the shipping box are 750 x 600 x 160mm. External dimensions of the case
are 555 x 440 x 90mm.

4) Configuration (top)
Configuration is extremely simple due to the on-board controller and web interface.

Wiring:
  • Plug in an ethernet cable from the SP30 to your router.
  • Plug in two power cables from the mains to your PSUs. The unit will auto turn on.

Configuration:
  • Navigate to your router and find the list of devices.
  • Using a browser, navigate to the IP assigned to the SP30 by your router.
  • Login using "admin" as the username and password.
  • Navigate to "Pools", enter miner information in the below format click save.
  • Navigate to "Settings" and change clock mode as desired. Use basic voltage settings unless you know what you are doing.
