Thank you for advice.  I will gladly go for that, but it seems to be unavailable.  Is that the best or would a 100 more make a difference in roi and daily coins?

It is still available with some resellers such as the one i gave you (https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/closed-antminer-s1-by-bitmain-in-los-angeles-ca-usa-new-price-511002)
or on Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/AntMiner-S1-180-standalone-unit/dp/B00HNTUC2M)

Actually, most devices ROI is about the same, but the S1 is a middle-class one which isn't expensive as others and provides a decent hashrate.

Well I am new to this and not sure that this is really a profitable endeavor given recent crash in bitcoin, but I would invest 500 USD or so to see.  I was thinking about the  Hex Fury from ASIC which does 11 GH and is currently available. The bitmain look better but are all sold out and no prices are available.
So happy for advice on how to start a bit of fun and profitable mining for 500 or so.

That thing is just too expensive.
How about an AntMiner S1?
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=511002.80

It makes $6.75 per day, at current difficulty and price.
Costs $426

It can ROI in like 3 months or 4.

wow that is absolute crap.  So what do you recommend if I really wanted to give this a go and mine something more profitable.  Guess my laptop wont cut it.  What route do you recommend?

What is the amount that you could invest? It really depends on that.

I just started the mining thing today.  I installed GUIMINER on my laptop which has i7 CPU, 16GB ram and a Asus 560M graphics card.

The laptop runs very hot and blows hot air out the back of the machine like crazy.  Although the cpu utilization is 20% or so, the machine is hot.  I wanted to check with others here what can be done to fix this or if that is just the fact of a laptop and that GPU?

I am getting 41 M/s hash  - is that good?   Considering that bitmine sells machines that get 1.2 G/s I am wondering if this is worth running on a 3 year old laptop?

Thank you for advising a newbie

First, it is useless to mine with 41Mh/s.
Second, the "hot air" has nothing to do with your CPU, it's your graphics card.
Switch it off, you will yield 0.00010243BTC per month, equal to $0.05.
