Cryptocurrency is specially profitable for hackers, and as many people already pointed out, exchanges and large cryptocurrency websites are a main target for hackers. The thing is that, they are always going to be a main target for hackers, no matter what security measures are taken. Below the headline of the article it says:

"There have been at least three dozen heists of cryptocurrency exchanges since 2011 and more than 980,000 bitcoins stolen, worth about $4bn"

Which is pretty alarming to be honest.

To answer the questions, we don't know who these hackers are, like hackers looking for new opportunities, good exchanges should be always looking to have a strong security foundation which is the basis of their trust after all. The only thing that'll help minimizing these thefts are the organizations themselves solving security problems and innovating on the security aspect of their business and that's how you stop them.

Now, it's really important that not only exchanges take further security measures, but also minimize the amount of people that are not taking strong security measures in order to protect their cryptos or the people that are victims of obvious scams. We always need more education on that aspect and I'm sure that new technologies are going to tackle this problem.

We need this hackers to learn where we did mistake on sites. They will take advantage of weakness and reward will be big.But almost every ico announce bug bounty and this time they can hack legally..

This is a very good point. And I'll say that bounties on legal hacking for spotting security issues for organizations are a big step towards minimizing harm and rewarding the people that are investing their time on improving a technology. One good example of this is the Ethereum Bounty Program.

Hackers will always be trying to cause chaos that is the nature of the free market. You have to arm yourself with the best weapons, or services, that the space has to offer in order to survive. Also DYR.

Cryptocurrency exchanges are absolutely nothing to do with the security of Bitcoin as a whole.  If you're a massive public target which has a large collection of employees with mixed responsibility over the coins, you have a history of irresponsibly handling your customers' coins, and you don't have adequate audits like a lot of these exchanges, it's absolutely nothing to do with Bitcoin when you inevitably fuck up and someone takes the coins.

It's comparable to if banks were created seven years ago, handling a new form of money which they can't control which was only created eight years ago.

BTC brings sovereignty over your funds.  If you can't handle that, it's your fault, but 256-bit security is perfectly sound and it's not even close to being Bitcoin-specific.

BTC is very hard to steal, but it's also the most appealing to steal because no one can reverse the transaction and its pseudonymity looks very good when you compare it to digital fiat money, so people try very hard to steal it and pick off the vulnerable targets.

hackers has stole fiat in the past too, it's not exclusive of crypto. If people take more security measures their coins will be safer.

IMO, this is evolved version of robbery and thief. For the past years, there are such person around. They are actually intelligent people, it is a pity that they choose to scam people instead.

Looks like a huge number of people actively hacking/stealing, that is what I am alarmed at.
These are high tech educated people like us. Not some school dropout, misguided youth on the streets.

It will get better over time. There are still those that clone credit cards and make huge profits. These are people that take advantage of other people's ignorance and carelessness. It's somewhat easier within the crypto ecosystem, due to its nature. People are throwing large amounts of cash for a couple words written in a pdf, interaction is not user friendly, so on and so on. It will get better as crypto goes forward, given that it won't collapse. An overwhelming amount of scams and fraudulent behavior can turn off the truly big fish. I have faith that these things will be addressed with time, though.
