Recently I have read several topics that their Trezor, Ledger wallet got compromised! They never ever take pictures of secret seed, they did not save phrase code in online. Then how their hardware wallet got compromised? Today this thread shocks me, https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/loss-of-bitcoins-from-hw-wallet-need-help-understanding-4869771 , What should we do now to secure our assets! I am really feeling not secure anymore. I did not take any pictures, did not save phrase code anywhere. But, still am I not safe? OMG!
I do not believe that it can be hacked but I believe that you can share your password in every case of your life even the not knowing about that so you would that are just be careful with that.

All can be hacked. But if you are careful enough and will not give anyone your data, everything will be in order and no one will hack you.

Of course its not 100% sure. But the hacker needs physical access to your hw wallet, what makes it harder for the hacker. (Or he manipulated the hw wallet before he sold this to random people).

Still the safest way to safe coins. just my 2 cents.

I am not sure about how the hacker can manage to hack a user hardware wallet successfully, but I would strongly recommend if there is anyone who are interested to purchase a hardware wallet for storing their crypto-currencies, they should always purchase it directly from the original distributor of the hardware wallet and avoid buying those hardware wallets on either Ebay or Amazon even if the seller claims to sell the hardware wallet at a much lower price than the original distributor, as you would never know they might install some malicious program on that hardware wallet in order to steal your crypto-currencies from you.

You and other 15 users ( so far ) did not read anything in that thread except maybe the title and the first post.

OP is also posted in Bitcoin Technical Support and he/she is obviously forgot on this thread.

Thanks for the help everyone. At this point, all indications point towards an insider job. We have traced the chain of custody and it is unrelated to any technical issue with Trezor.

So it is clear that there is no problem with Trezor, insider job probably means that some of victim family/friends took advantage of the opportunity and wipe out his hardware wallet. Since it is over 35 BTC stolen this is classic case for police, the thief probably left some traces. What we can learn from this that even coins are on hardware wallet and seed written down on paper does not mean we are safe.

Written in a very simple way - OP friend is just a victim of someone close, friend or family member who use his seed written on paper or securiy PIN code for physical access to Trezor. There is no hack of hardware wallet, really do not understand the amount of ignorance some users on this forum show each day.

The user maybe a noob at using Trezor or it might be bought from someone who already used it. Any wallet is secured even though those software wallets installed in our computers or mobile devices. The reason why we are getting a victim of hacking and fraud is because of being "Careless".

OP, don't be so scared about your assets, whatever wallet are you using right now I'm sure that you won't encounter any trouble as long as you stay safe. I'm just using a software wallet in my android phone and I never encountered such problems. Its because I'm taking good care of my personal and private informations.

Yes, you heard that right and unfortunately, that's true in some case. people bought hardwallet from the third person and got scammed. that's an only reason I use an offline computer and paper wallet along with ledger. I am not very tech savvy person so I am more paranoid about hacking and all that.
I choose longer road like dividing my portfolio in small % and saving in a different location. its lengthy process due to lots of password and seed etc but its working for me.
I even don't watch Porn anymore with my PC Cheesy just for safety sake.

buy another computer and through it do all the operations

100% agree with that. actually, I too use an offline computer as my bank. don't have a big portfolio but still better safe then sorry.

Poor Cybersec practice often leads to hacks, as was always said by cybersec experts. First thing's first, never ever buy a secondhand hardware wallet as it can be injected with those filthy stuff that can get a hold of your balance no matter how you change the password every time. Second, never ever connect your devices into public networks as it can snoop all of your information no matter how 'secure' you think your devices are. The way I see on the thread, apparently someone has gained access on his Trezor without him knowing. It could be a technical vulnerability on the hardware wallet though it can also be that some people in his circle is screwing up with him.

100% will not be protected, but if you have a decent amount, buy another computer and through it do all the operations

That's true. But Hardware wallet is much safer than online wallets. Nothing can provide a 100% result or 100% security. Everywhere has a risk. But my idea is, Hardware wallet is much safer than other wallets. Personally, I using Ledger wallet. I've stored my all altcoins to ledger wallet. I think the ledger wallet has great security features. But be careful before using hardware wallet because of some Hardware Wallets available from a 3rd party version. So be careful. I think if you can manage your works very well, definitely you can protect your all things.

There's already an update for that thread as it seems like it's insider job, family/friends took advantage of the opportunity and wipe out his hardware wallet. There's no technical mistake on the trezor side. It's unlikely that you will lose your money if you are using hardware wallet unless there's technical fault or they brute force your phrase which is very unlikely.

there has never been 100% safe anywhere and there will never be such a thing. everything you see will have some sort of flaw in it, some more serious than others. the way is to only increase your security as much as you can and follow all the safety protocols and then wish that nothing bad happens.

the topic you linked so far has been a "hit and run" topic! since OP of it has not yet come back to answer to anything that was asked or give an update. there is a lot of things that one can do to leak his private keys that may not even be the wallet's fault.

This is so true. Nothing can provide a 100% result, the same works for security as well. Both hot online wallet and hardware wallet could be either safe (if you use it accordingly and carefully) and extremely dangerous (if you don't know how to keep your passwords in secret or how to use a wallet correctly).

don't be anxious, no one have access to your wallet if they're not own the seed or the private key , don't be so worried, take it easy  Grin

It doesn't look like anyone knows what happened yet, so you probably shouldn't panic. I take it you own a Trezor? One thing you can do to alleviate your anxiety would be to split up your holdings by sending some to cold storage. Electrum, Bitcoin Core, etc. can generate wallets offline so it's pretty trivial for as long as your computer is clean.

But yeah, it hasn't been proven that remote attacks are possible on uncompromised hardware wallets yet so I personally wouldn't worry. Someone was probably able to access his seed physically.

First of all you need to know and understand that every wallet can get compromised regardless of multiple security feature.

It is not the wallet that has been compromised, it is always the way it has been used ot kept that made it compromised.

If 90 percent people are happy with Hardware wallet and only 10 percent are complaining then who is to be blamed the wallet or those individuals.

I might be wrong but this is what I felt.

I think this pretty much says it all. Even a paper wallet can be compromised if it's made on a insecure computer, or others have physical access.

Thinking a wallet is 100% safe is your own demise. Always take precautions, regardless of how "secure" the method may seem to be.

Eloncoin.org - Mars, here we come!
You may not know maybe a relative of that guy or friend is taking advantage while your away after you exposed that you've got hardware wallet (trezor/nano).

It can also be another scam tactic if that guy was saving his seeds to any of his computer/laptop and a malware/virus came in where can grant remote access.

I'll follow that thread to know more.

First thing first. Do that person buy his trezor from eBay? Cause the second person used hardware wallet is the dangerous wallet you ever get, cause there some people who capable of modified software and tools and if he bad enough he will do that by buying a bunch of trezor wallets modified it and sell it again, when someone uses it the balance will likely to be stolen. So the hardware wallet itself is safe, just make sure you get it from the official store.
