Hey Furball, What's going on with your Pool? Is everything running alright? I'd like to mine some more in your pool to buy more USB ASICMiners but your pool did not pay me for a full 8 Days so I moved. Are you alright Furball? Jesse11

So sorry for not getting back to you sooner Jesse11! I was away on holidays with my family and was finding it hard to get to Wifi etc. Hope it didn't cause you too much hassle!

I'm back now and have updated Harvestcoin to the latest versions of Bitcoin, Litecoin and P2Pool and all seems good.

Again, sorry for the delay and I hope you'll reconsider mining on the pool again.

Cheers,

Hey Furball,

Thought I'd jump on and say hello, and ask a few questions. I'm new to mining (and btc... and this forum!) as of June or so, but have been mining on harvestcoin pretty steadily because of no-signup and that you were running litecoin mining on the same pool.

I started with a free 68XX series radeon card I got at work, a free AMD A10 5800K processor & MoBo combo I got at an AMD fan give-away, and a $100 media case & power supply from goodwill. I pointed it all at your litecoin miner, and got a first taste of money from the terminal line. Mmm.

I bought a lot of 10 USB block erupters & hub to run them, mined with them on harvestcoin while I was trying to turn them around on craigslist, and sold (9) of them in USD to break-even. Now I have the radeon card & amd processor, (1) USB block-erupter, and a 9-port Anker hub & usb fan, for the cost of my case & p/s.

got an offer to buy another (10) usb miners at 0.11 btc per, so ponied up a little bit more cash. After the ~0.6btc the first (10) Erupters had mined while I was waiting to sell them, I needed to buy another 1btc or so to cover shipping, etc. Now I'm in for ~$200US, w/ ~3.75 G/hash in hand before the end of August.

Still debating whether I want to sell the additional miners while they're inflated in value, or just take the ride in mining while the USB sticks are still able to produce. I'm in low enough I could actually see break-even, but the opportunity cost the market is providing me with for these USB miners right now is... quite measurable. I'm thinking the most profitable thing to do would be sell the Erupters and buy coin or direct shares of a larger mining pool. That would be less fun than watching the returns through harvestcoin, though, and I am doing this for fun...

Enough waxing idiotic about my setup, my questions!

is it preferable to use different BTC addresses for different bitcoin miners? for instance, I have two separate terminal windows running cgminer, as I have two separate sets of devices mining that require two separate command strings for optimal performance. Would it be advantageous to generate new receiving btc addresses for each of these command strings? reading around on definitions of a P2Pool [1], it says that each miner is set up as a node of that pool, got me thinking that different devices trying to mine on the same node might be "bumping into each other", effectively. Thoughts?

I have noticed very large discrepancies in the TIMING of payouts (obviously between mining w/ 3 GHash vs. 500MHash, but also in holding to a regular rate). Is this just inherent in the structure of P2Pool mining? Am I effectively 'waiting for a block to be found' when I'm seeing spells of non-payment? Admittedly, I've been bad about turning my miners on & off (moving houses, etc.), so I may also just be observing that 24-48 waiting period compounding with breaks in mining. Thoughts?

On your 'pool stats' page, you show a 'local rate' graph, and value listed. What is this rate? I'm only mining ~500MHash/sec, but it shows 1.03 GHash/sec as local rate. Is this 'local' as in miners on a shared node? Am I being grouped w/ somebody? Just wondering how it all works.

Thanks much for the easy-to-use mining pool. If I end up keeping my miners, I'll shoot you a healthy tip when I hit my total break-even (at $200 USD in, should be quick!), and if I sell them I'll do the same.

why Payout if a block were found is 0 on your pool these days?

also can i run multiple cpuminer on different pc with the same Username and password from different pc's ??

Hi there,

The payout figure on the stats page is actually an indication of how much me, as the pool operator, will be paid if a block is found right now. As you can see it's been a while since I've received anything from running the pool.

If you're interested in finding out how much YOU will be paid if a block is found, click on the graphs page and find your address; if there is a thin line on the second graph below your address this means that you have a share accepted and it shows how much you will be paid when the block is found.

As regards your question on multiple cpuminers; yes, you can run multiple miners on different PC's and use the same username and password; your total hashrate will be calculated from the hashrate of each miner put together.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any further questions,

It's LiR6rS9pjUJBx4Cbc5yg6ZCU95ywXoi7Ef, but I only tried it for a few hours.  I probably won't run it for long until I figure out how to raise my Hash Rate.

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and I have a Radeon Sapphire 7870.

I tried a vanilla cgminer command with no flags (except the server, login and --scrypt), and also tried a few other things I found posted in various forums:

-p 1234 --thread-concurrency 8192 -g 1 -w 256

I only got my hash rate above 20K when I put the --Intensity > 15.  Still seemed low.

Anyway, I'm going to keep learning.  There's so much to read!!! Smiley

I wouldn't worry about being new to it, I think we're all still learning!!  Smiley

When you mine on Litecoin your hashrate changes from Mh to Kh but I wouldn't expect it to drop that much...mining Litecoin is slightly different to Bitcoin on P2Pool so maybe use the default settings on your miner and not necessarily the flags that I gave you for Bitcoin...they work well with BTC but LTC is a different kettle of fish.

Whats your Litecoin address? I'll keep an eye on the stats for you and see if I can help anyway.

Thanks for the detailed reply, I'll give it a try.  I'm new to this and I'm mostly having fun learning.

Perhaps you can refer me to a good introduction to scrypt mining.  Should I be alarmed that my hash rate goes from 380M to 20K when I try litecoins?

There's tons of information out there.  I've been a little slow sorting through it.

Hi RangerK,

Due to the way P2Pool works I would try using these flags to improve performance :

./cgminer -o http://mining.harvestcoin.com:9332 -u xxx -p xxx -Q 0 -g 1 --intensity d --gpu-dyninterval 50

I know the general consensus on mining is get your intensity as high as you can go but with P2Pool it works better if you change it to dynamic, so I would give the above options a go and see how you get on.

Also, it is common for it to take some time to see payments come through on P2Pool, so give it a good 24-48 hours of testing before you make any decisions on it.

Just to make you aware, mining Bitcoin has become harder recently with the difficulty increases and P2Pool nodes are seeing some "bad luck" in the last week or so...not that I'm trying to discourage you, there's still lots of "dust" to make! ;-)

Here at Harvestcoin we have seen people migrating from Bitcoin to Litecoin as the "luck", difficulty and network hashrate is still very consistent and miners are getting consistent payouts. Again, I'm not trying to discourage you but I would just suggest you give things a go and if its not what you hoped for, you could try mining Litecoin on Harvestcoin instead.

Let me know if you need any further help.

Cheers,

Hi RangerK,

Thanks for trying Harvestcoin, appreciate it.

If you could give me more information about your mining setup we can try and get you mining more efficiently :

1: Which coin are you mining? We do Bitcoin AND Litecoin at Harvestcoin.
2: What miner are you using? I would suggest cgminer if you're not already using it; I can suggest some configurations which will help you mine on Harvestcoin.
3: What percentage of rejects are you getting? This could be a miner config issue, so the information you provide in number 2 above should help us sort that out.

The "Stratum from pool 0 requrested work restart." is perfectly normal on a pool such as Harvestcoin as it uses server side software called P2Pool and this is a standard message from this server; it does indicate any issue with your mining setup.

Thanks again for trying it and lets hope we can get you mining well.

F.

Certainly, and thank you for the prompt reply.

1. Bitcoin
2. cgminer with the following command:  ./cgminer -o http://mining.harvestcoin.com:9332 -u xxx -p xxx -I 15 --temp-cutoff 75
3. about 25% rejected

Thanks for giving it a go...just be aware that when you're mining on P2Pool it is worth giving it a good 24 hours of mining with a decent hashrate to accurately see what sort of payouts you will get. The Litecoin P2Pool is finding blocks regularly so once you get a share accepted, you should payments coming through...just takes a bit of patience.

First of all, thanks very much for mining at Harvestcoin!

Yes, you are right in what you say that your hashrate is probably the reason for the slow payouts. If you look at the second graph you will see a short horizontal line which indicates that your miners managed to get a share submitted and then during that period of the line being present, IF a block was found by the entire P2Pool network you would have been paid that amount.

As you can see the line disappeared later on, so that meant that the share is no longer valid and even if the pool finds a block, you will not receive any payment.

I would suggest that you try and increase your hashrate to try and get more shares submitted in P2Pool..have a look at other miners hashrates and how it affects the payout line in the second graph.

Also, we are in a strange bad luck time right now across the whole P2Pool network where very few blocks are being found...could just be a phase or might have more to do with the network difficulty going up recently...still not too sure.

Hope that helps somewhat.

Just a quick reminder to the people who are mining on Harvestcoin(thank you by the way!), to reduce DOA(Dead On Arrival's) please tune your miner(cgminer/bfgminer) with the following options :

-Q 0 -g 1 --intensity d --gpu-dyninterval 50

Because of fast longpooling in p2pool it is better to NOT fetch work ahead. Dyninterval sets the maximum amount of time a GPU should be blocked, it's set in milliseconds. 50ms is a good compromise because the hashrate is still good and the maximum blocked time is still less than 0.5% of the share interval of P2Pool so can't influence its efficiency much (theoretically at most 0.25%).

Thanks to gyverlb for this recommendation... see more in his excellent guide at https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/a-guide-for-mining-efficiently-on-p2pool-includes-fud-repellent-and-faq-153232

By us all tuning our miners we can have a more efficient pool and hence more profitable! Thanks!

14% isn't too bad but could always be better...at least it is lower than the overall pool rate, so shouldn't affect you.

What miner are you using? P2Pool can be picky with miner settings. If you're using cgminer try using these flags to improve performance on Harvestcoin :

-Q 0 -g 1 --intensity d --gpu-dyninterval 50

Also, it is common for it to take some time to see payments come through on P2Pool, so give it a good 24-48 hours of testing before you make any decisions on it.

Yes, those 'stratum from pool 0 requested work restart' messages are perfectly normal and you should see those approximately every 10 seconds or so when you are connected to P2Pool; so in my mind it looks like you are connected to the pool alright but your GPU has not been initialized so you are not actually mining the work that the pool is sending to you.

I'm guessing you've done the usual things like, made sure you have the most up to date GPU driver, rebooted etc etc...sorry if that advice is beneath you! ;-)

Ok I transferred your settings to cgminer, but now I get 'Failed to init GPU thread 0, disabling device 0'

then - 'Restarting the GPU from the menu will not fix this'

'Press enter to continue'

Once I press enter, I then get lots of 'stratum from pool 0 requested work restart' messages.

I appear to be connected, but not mining, and have a zero hash rate.

Hi there,

Yes, so you're spot on that you're not getting registered with the server. P2Pool can be quite picky when it comes to miner config so can you try running your miner with the following setup? (I've added your address in here so you can just copy and paste the whole thing)

cgminer -o http://mining.harvestcoin.com:9332 -u 1ATvkkwAHAT6ceFpi2z27UEFe5DPMQ2VxC -p 123qwe -Q 0 -g 1 --intensity d --gpu-dyninterval 50 --auto-fan

Also, did you mean Mhz rather than Khz? Mining with BTC tends to be measured in Mhz whereas LTC and others are measured in Khz.

Hi

My BTC address I am using is - 1ATvkkwAHAT6ceFpi2z27UEFe5DPMQ2VxC

I am using cgminer

Additional options in cgminer - thread-concurrency 8192  --no-submit-stale --intensity 13 --worksize 256 -g 2 --auto-fan

My hash rate isn't that great atm, due to the warm weather, and my wanting to keep temps down on my 7970 Dual-x  (until I sort out additional cooling), so I am using default settings, not overclocked, and getting about 480khz which is about right I think.

I am with Virgin Media UK broadband 120mb wired ethernet

Many thanks

2: Which miner are you using? cgminer/bfgminer etc
3: Are you using any options in your miner other than the basic setup as described on harvestcoin.com? If so, please include them.
4: What sort of hash rate are you expecting to see?

I am not sure what I am doing wrong, but after mining on your btc pool for two separate 8 hour shifts, I am not detected as mining on http://mining.harvestcoin.com:9332/.

Followed directions to mine carefully (have been mining successfully elsewhere bitcoins and litecoins) and used this guide http://www.harvestcoin.com/ which was straightforward.

Should I have installed P2Pool software before mining?

To add:  I get a reasonable hashrate, though the second time I mined, I received quite a lot of rejected shares - though a lot more accepted ones.  Otherwise, all looks well when mining, but as said previously, there is no sign of my miner on the p2pool btc.

Advice appreciated

No problem. It's been working great so far.

I'm kind of new at this, but if I mine using your node using multiple workers with the same address, will the hashrate accumulate or will all but one of the workers be ignored?

Delighted to hear it is working well for you cheesylard, its a relief to hear!

You can definitely mine with multiple miners with the same address; it will be totaled up within the system...so if you have 2 miners running at 100mh, it will be counted as 200mh to that one address.

As your the first person to complement the pool, send me your address and I'll fire you through a small tip! ;-)

Maybe you could add an API, so we can see how fast, and how many bitcoins/litecoins we already mined. Wink

I am pleased to announce the launch of Harvest Coin, the P2Pool based pool mining system with all the following benefits :

  • Mine Bitcoins, Litecoins or BOTH on the same system
  • Gain all the benefits of pooled mining to optimize your mining resources
  • No registration needed, just add your address and go!
  • DDOS resistant; due to the decentralised nature of the P2Pool, DDOS attacks become a thing of the past
  • Safe and secure payment mechanism with accountability across all the nodes of the network
  • Stratum mining protocol supported by default
  • Low fees compared to most other P2Pool providers

For beginners or for more information please see www.harvestcoin.com

If you would like to start mining at Harvest Coin right now, point your miners to :

http://mining.harvestcoin.com:9332     (Bitcoin mining; use your Bitcoin address as username)

http://mining.harvestcoin.com:9327     (Litecoin mining; use your Litecoin address as username)

Any thoughts, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
