Free of charge to use.   But nothing is free.   To use this you need to have location enabled, for one -- so you know that data is being recorded, archived and likely shared with marketers.

Also, as many Square merchants learned, if there are disputes your deposits get delayed or reversed.  Here's an example:

So let's see how long before there is a chorus of people who were expecting a deposit that never happens.  It's a new service and is for "cash" (versus credit card) though ... so maybe they'll have fewer issues.

and how they are earning money, by selling credit card numbers?

As far as I can figure out, that is a complete unknown.  Maybe they are just doing some kind of experiment.  Not your average scammer though, Square.

I would try it myself, but I'm not in the US of A.

I'm wondering if anyone has played with this.  I just read about it, and it sounds pretty amazing, and perhaps even useful for people to use with Localbitcoins or something else.

"Square Cash doesn't require either person in a transaction to have a Square account, and there are no fees, said product manager Brian Grassadonia. In order to send money, all that's required is for the sender to address an e-mail to the recipient, with a CC: to [email protected], and the amount in the e-mail's subject line. The body of the email can contain any information the sender wants.

Although users don't need a Square Cash account, both the sender and the recipient must link their e-mail address to a debit card, Grassadonia explained. That step takes place after the e-mail is sent. Once a recipient has gone through that process, that person can then send someone else money without having to re-enter their debit card number. The funds are deposited directly in the recipient's bank account, and not in a stored balance account. "
