During the week I stayed at the Mirage and that was a dream. At the weekends I found a couple of dives: one was a Travelodge and the other was a greasy-spoony sort of raggèd hotel just south of the Strip, over the Interstate highway bridge, where I distinctly remember some crazy guy screaming and kicking walls and bins around one morning while I was gobbling my brekkie! (He didn't seem to be armed, however.) Even those near-Strip/off-Strip dives were overpriced 'cause it's expensive at weekends when all the raff come up from LA to play.

I can second the Travelodge on the strip. It's like the best kept secret on the strip, IMHO. Real dive, but if all your doing is sleeping there, it's one of the best locations, everything is pretty much just a walk away. Nowadays though I could probably afford something a bit nicer, but as someone fresh out of college and going on it cheap, it was great.

Also, Mandelay Bay has pools and often has a few good deals. Plus it's right next to the airport, so when you show up, the taxi or bus ride is dirt cheap comparatively. Also its an equally-quick jaunt to get back to the airport, which can be really helpful if you have some weird departure times and are worried about time. A negative is that it's at one end of the strip, so you're going to be paying the bus fare pretty much every day if you're not up for a lot of walking.

I've seen Cirque du Soleil and Penn & Teller. Being a libertarian, I obviously enjoyed the latter more, but the Cirque show I saw was pretty cool, I'm not going to lie. I am not sure it was worth what I paid, but if you are going with a date, it's going to be your best/safest option. If you're just going to have fun and an enjoyable time, go see Penn & Teller instead and hang out a bit to watch the dancers at the Rio and maybe play some Roulette while you wait.

Also, don't forget to hit a few of the rides at the Stratosphere. Make sure you share your brainwallet info with a loved one before you get on the rides though.

Blue Man Group, Old Vegas, Cirque du Soleil, Walking the strip you'll find some good stuff. Depending on what hotel you're at they should have a place where you can sign up for deals on restaurants and shows.

I've been to vegas at least half a dozen times and still haven't seen BLUE MAN GROUP.

Some day...maybe the December Bitcoin conference in Vegas would be a good time to do that.

There used to be a booth set up here that offered up all the major coupons:

Century Food Martmore
3041 South Las Vegas Boulevard
Las Vegas, NV 89109
Las Vegas Plaza Shopping Center‎
(702) 731-0802

It's across the street from Walgreens on the corner of LV BLVD & Convention Center Dr.

Reminds me of a story a poker room manager at Whiskey Pete's once relayed to me, of whom I refer to as Bob.

Bob was telling me that the other day he was at Caesar's dropping dollars in a slot machine when a gold digger approached him. The following conversation is paraphrased:

GD: How you doing?
Bob: Not too bad.
GD: Where you from?
Bob: Cleveland.
GD: Oh my God, I'm from Cleveland!

I smiled and said I have to try that line sometime. Being that the small poker room was right next to a bank of slots, I had my chance within seconds to try it out within earshot of Bob. A woman was now sitting in front of a slot machine only a few feet from where Bob was standing. The following exchange took place.

Me: How you doing?
Woman: Don't know yet. I just got here.
Me: Seriously? Where you from?
Woman: Anchorage, Alaska.
Me: You're kidding? I'm from Cleveland.

The woman stared at me oddly as I walked back to Bob who was unable to contain himself.

Me: It didn't work.
Bob: Idiot! You were suppose to say Anchorage, not Cleveland.
Me: But I'm not from Anchorage.
Bob: You're not from Cleveland either.
Me: Picking up women is so hard. I'm going back to table. I see the button is coming back around.

Where did you play, for maybe we crossed paths? Vegas? Tunica? Biloxi?

Nah, eastern Australia, and New Zealand, not the US. I visited Vegas once in 2005, however.

No, turn back before its too late Smiley. Anyway just enjoy and set a side how much you are willing to lose and that's it.
Unless you're a professional player and use 1$ and come back with 1 million?  Roll Eyes

I used to be a small-time poker pro in a past life. It was a helluva grind.

I find it easier to make money flipping cryptocurrencies (and IMHO my currency trading skills aren't as good as my poker ones), not to mention the free and clean entertainment of troll boxes. It seems that an 0,2% "rake" is less of a headwind than a 10% one!

Pay a week at Budget Suites, just barely off the strip.
Phin!!!!!!!!!
really?
That is a crack house.
If he really is so broke that he needs to stay there, he should not come.    You can get REALLY cheap rooms at excalibur ($30 sometimes) or circus circus or new york new york.
Go to the casinos' websites and look for the RATE CALENDAR and pick your days based on price of rooms.

Maybe now, but I remember when they were built, even stayed there a couple times.

I visited LV... once, in October 2005. (The TSA at US airports were awful even then, by the way.)

Most of the advice you've heard in this thread is reasonably sound.

Gambling's my vice, I don't do drugs or hookers - though I understand they are illegal in Clark County anyway? (Not that they should be illegal, just that they are. And in the bars, the hookers might even approach you and ask for insane prices - LOL.)

Since you're going to play poker, call the poker rooms and get the poker rate. Circus Circus may be one resort(?) to consider. Rivera is located across the street.

Now, if you're going to Nevada just to play poker for a week and want good action and very cheap rooms, consider Laughlin. The poker rate is between $10-$20, whereas the those in the know, like me, would get their rooms fully comped. Primm is another option.
PG:   for the man usually up on all the latest news, you have disappointed me.   Poker rooms are closing (I gave him a link to all vegas rooms and what games/tourneys they run) BUT circus circus' poker room closed a week or two ago.   Their room is now full of penny slots....

You're shittin' me! WOW!

Thanks.  That is good info there.  I have never been, I envisioned that if I stayed on one end of the strip, it would be walking distance to the other end.  I assume that is not the case?
sure.  google map it.    I would not walk it, but it is not that long.   Walking down parts of it are interesting (see the spectrum of america).   i would not stay downtown (dump).

Went there to play poker at the Belagio on my way to Mexico. Good memories. Cheapest place that I know was Vegas hostel. It was like $20/night and not far from the strip.

I went there for DEFCON. I'll just say, weekends in Vegas are rarely cheap. They jack up the prices on the weekends. If you don't mind staying off strip, you might want to check Sam's Town. If you want to stay on strip, check out Hooters maybe. Or perhaps The Rio (incidentally where DEFCON is held), they're pretty decent, and they have Penn and Teller.
