OP should've thought earlier about possible migration paths, especially since this very old Ledger hardware became deprecated and later unsupportet. No blame intended, it's just to highlight the importance of awareness for migration from hardware that looses support and becomes unusable with newer versions of wallet software.

Another thing is, I would migrate my wallet as soon as possible when I realize that I don't have the mnemonic recovery words anymore, for whatever reason. The latter shouldn't happen, but we all know that shit happens anyway.

Given that there is no seed, and that Ledger has firmware that cannot be upgraded, I think that the only way to succeed is doing something advised by @nc50lc. Apart from that, I don't see how to approach this problem differently and solve it in a positive way.

I've seen this so many times.... How can so many people lose access to the single most important thing when holding Bitcoin?

I assume that the OP invested in Bitcoin back when it was worth maybe only a few hundred $ and did not believe that it would ever be worth what it is today. Before every bull run, we have the same problems - people realize that maybe they have something valuable, but also that they have a big problem that they can't access it.

the old electrum doesn't work anymore
What "doesn't work"? I'd say it should be possible to run an old version of Electrum, if needed with your own node running an equally old version. Even if it can't sync all current blocks, you should be able to send your funds to a new Legacy address.

Don't have the seed anymore unfortunately

and the electrum versions (new) don't recognize the device, (older) give "read error" when trying to sign a transaction
Has this worked before, back in the days when you were using this hardware wallet? Or did you always use Ledger's own software?

thanks everyone for the assistance

I tried on a linux machine, but to my understanding, the last versions of Electrum supporting such old hardware were the 2.... and the 3... versions do not.
I have no means to test this since I don't have that old HW, but;
Try to create raw transaction in a "watch-only wallet" in v3.3.8, then export that unsigned transaction to a v2.x Electrum connected to your hardware wallet to be signed.
Export the signed transaction back to v.3.3.8 and broadcast it.

The watch-only wallet should be created with your addresses by importing them via "Import bitcoin addresses or private keys" option in new wallet option.

The options to export are in this article: electrum.readthedocs.io/en/latest/coldstorage.html#create-an-unsigned-transaction
Do not use v4.x as your watch-only wallet because its unsigned transaction format isn't supported by v2.x.

can't update the ledger, and the old electrum doesn't work anymore while the new one doesn't support this old version
What are my options?
Have you tried using any alternative software wallets like Sparrow, Specter wallet or even Blockstream Green and connecting them with your ledger?
I am not sure if they are supporting old ledger devices, but they have much better support for different hardware wallets and signing devices.

PS
There was a topic in forum of someone managing to use old electrum version to connect ledger, but I can't find it now...

Don't have the seed anymore unfortunately, just remember the pin
Ledger old web app is also not supported anymore - the server side does not exist...

If you have your seed phrase, try delete and redownload and reinstall the wallet. Both Ledger Live and Electrum and see if any of it work.

You mean your device is too old to install Ledger Live and also not able to install Electrum? Window 7 and lower version of Windows can not successfully install recent versions of Electrum but I do not know of Ledger Live. Maybe it is time to install Linux OS like Ubuntu on your device. I am certain that Electrum will work perfectly if you are able to install Linux OS successfully. But before installing it, make sure your computer has the specifications needed for the installation. You will see the specs on the official site that you want to install the OS.
