The main problem of bitcoin is the investment factor. Because of the volatility of the bitcoin market buying any item could become an investment. It would just be too hard for a company like amazon or Ebay to accept this. Until a viable solution is proposed; sadly bitcoins will remain a great idea that will flourish in small market transactions; but fail where the big dogs run.

Radix-The Decentralized Finance Protocol
Could major sites be turned off by the instability in the market?

Obviously. But the only way to stop inestability is for more merchants to accept it. Its a snake that eats its own tale. When more merchants start accepting it, it will stabilize more and other merchants will join which will stabilitze it more... etc... The contrary is true as well.

Paying with bitcoins were you can and choosing merchants that accept bitcoins over the ones that dont when posible also helps convince the merchants that accepting bitcoin is a good idea. If a merchant starts accepting bitcoin and then no business comes that way...

I'm hard at work to accept Bitcoins in our shopping cart.
It is still so new that it is a challenge to setup.
It is currently an option in the checkout,  but it is completed manually.

That should all change this coming week!

I'm just saying. Memorydealers doesn't even show anywhere they accept BTC.

Well, Memory Dealers isn't hiding it:   (in Silicon Valley)

I'm guessing it is because the ecommerce software used does not already accommodate bitcoins and so as not to delay offering that option, the company says it accepts bitcoins, but it just isn't possible using though the online shopping cart interface just yet.

There aren't a ton of people who have experience adding bitcoin as a payment option.  Those that do offer that might find their schedule become busy after posting their availability here:

There are a ton of non-major sites that are accepting bitcoin, some of them accept only bitcoin.

and there are others coming onboard:

But generally, most software companies determine features based on demand and there likely hadn't been customers of theirs demanding support for bitcoin. Yet.

The sites you see accepting bitcoin are like Derek Siver's "dancing shirtless guys" -- those with the guts to stand alone and look ridiculous.  What are needed next are the first followers:

Why are all the above companies hiding the fact they accept bitcoins?

I'm just saying. Memorydealers doesn't even show anywhere they accept BTC. Wuala has the price option on a hidden page.

Only Virwox openly has a BTC logo along with paypal, mastercard etc.

Right now among the most recognizable names that accept Bitcoin as a payment method.

 - Wuala by LaCie http://wuala.com/bitcoin
 - Memory Dealers http://www.memorydealers.com
 - VirWoX exchange http://www.virwox.com

The biggest name tied to Bitcoin is Google:
Google pays the salary for an engineer who works on BitcoinJ as part of his 20% time project.

And there has been a couple of well known individuals involved with Bitcoin:
  - Randall Munroe creator of XKCD (mines bitcoin, trades on #bitcoin-otc)

  - Jason Calacanis, This Week in Startups show has Bitcoin as a recurring topic
  - Steve Gibson, Security Now show has Bitcoin as a recurring topic

Indirectly, bitcoins are already being used to make purchases at big names globally:
  - Buy Amazon gift cards with bitcoins http://www.bitplank.com/products/amazon-com-gift-card-25
  - Buy NewEgg gift cards with bitcoins http://www.btcbuy.info
  - Buy VISA / Mastercard prepaid cards

For example gambling sites. Will all the silk road clones that are just springing up accept bitcoin and turn it into a viable currency? Will the drug trade be the driver behind bitcoin's success? (I would have no problem with that.)
