Experience about losing Bitcoin assets is definitely there, everyone's story and experience will be different. I've been following several shitcoin investments that tricked me and I deposited some bitcoins in exchange for the shitcoins they made. some time waiting for the investment is not clear and even the official website is untraceable and is gone. The experience of following a shitcoin investment scam like this is a new lesson for me to be more careful in choosing the right investment. I always do research so I don't fall victim to fake investments anymore.

I did not lost my bitcoins by investing ins some ponzi scheme etc but i lost them through trading with altcoins. Even though i researched a lot before trading but still my many trades ended up in a loss due to bear market.

To my delight, I did not have this, but my friend was not lucky. He had about $ 50 in btc on his blockchain wallet. And somehow they just evaporated. They went to a strange address, where there were still different transfers and about 5 people left cometaries there, that he also stole the cue ball from them. My friend did not understand how this happened, since the rest of the private currency remained intact

My story is I lost my money because I don't back up my seed for by bitcoin wallet on blockchain.com.

I made another stupid loss when I did not write down my password for my altcoin wallet. I did not write it down because back at those days, I logged in that wallet everyday so I did not see reasons to write the password down. After that, price is down and I was tired, not log in wallet everyday. In fact I did not log in after 2 or 3 moths. When I came back, I forgot the password and can not get it back from my memory.

I know altcoin is shit from that lesson and the more stupid is that wallet still has values about 0.05 BTC. It is altcoin loss but can be converted to BTC.

From 2 losses, I learn to:
- Back up seed.
- Back up passwords.

You did not mentioned carelessness sending to your other address  you don''t have access anymore and investing in scam projects, I loss my Bitcoin on these two it's a big lesson for me to always check and double check the address where you are going to send before hitting the send button and investing in scam projects,  just lucky that the amount is not that huge to cause depression,  but this things can happen to anyone.

I believed it logical to lost Bitcoin at some point but I have lost BTC twice and it all happened in the same year (2016). The first situation happened through MMM Japan which is crypto investment and the Second is an investment Roi site where people are to buy contract using BTC and do some tasks to make good reward have forgotten the company name though but all this situation are what increase my knowledge in spotting out scam projects.

there were those cloud mining services that didn't take that last step and simply shut down their business like cex.io mining farm back in 2015.

I am very sorry that I did not know about cryptocurrencies at the time when such cluod mining platforms existed. They look very attractive to small investors. It is a pity that today 99% of such projects end up as scams.

i am not copied them but sign up on about almost  100 diferent web sites over time  i must change my identity in credentials i use maybe to instal some master pasword aplication but dont know how secure there are.

As far as I know, that is not your private key but the public key or BTC address. There is no security risk of entering that address in various places as long as your private key is secure.
Although, the general consensus is to generate new addresses for each new transaction. Most wallets today work that way.

I was a victim of this fake website crypto-pandemic.ltd before when I was a beginner. They offer to double your money for only 24 hours, so as a beginner, I became really interested in it because of thinking that I could earn a lot of money when I invest my money here. Without hesitation I invest 0.001 BTC I waited for 24 hours but nothing happens, it doesn't make me doubt on it because fake or scam website is not really familiar to me, I waited again for another day, almost 5 days of waiting and nothing still happen. So I ask my good friend about it, he said that it is a scam because there is no legit investment website that will double your money for only 24 hours.

I am really disappointed at that time because as a beginner that amount of money is already big for me but it already happened and there's no way for me to recover my lost money. I already learned my lesson and I won't trust those kinds of offers again.

I lost some coins when I was starting cause I jumped right away into trading and the platform I used is a local wallet, coinsph to be exact. It wasn't profitable cause you'll lose some in that local wallet, its just unfair compared to using other trading platform. I was also not patient cause I've realized I'm losing coins so much each day, I decided to get it back so I lose some of what I invest. So it's my first lost.

This taught me a lot, and even its just a few coins compared to other users here, it makes me understand what it means to be knowledgeable. I've gone through many research, read so many articles, opinions, watched a lot of youtube technical analysis, and etc. I've realize to use another platform when it comes to trading, at the same time, learning the whole bitcoin itself.

Sometimes you need to lose before you learn, but its possible to avoid my mistake too, by researching before even trying. Its just because at that time, I'm so excited what bitcoin can really offer with its, volatility and such. That's when I understand this currency, by actually trying to use it.

I haven’t lost any BTC yet but there are some people who lose everything to them due to lack of adequate knowledge. At work their personal information is provided on each site and the password keys are not secure. This problem is more common in newcomers. That's why you need to keep your passwords secure to keep your BTC safe and keep backup files no matter what site you work on.

what is this "brake pedal" you speak of?
ive lost many due to my own stupidity over the many years.. testing new wallets without understanding them enough, not having copies of seeds, having a couple paper wallets deteriorate, not maintaining proper backups.

best masterpasw application is old paper notebook and ink pencil .

the typical paper notebook is pretty low quality paper. ink blurs and washes out. use high quality archive paper and pencil (doesnt wash out typically) or permanent marker (test it 1st companies seem to differ on whats "permanent").

better: stamped high melting point metal of some sort.

Yes, I have lost bitcoin after selling it at low price due to panic selling when bitcoin market crashes on late of 2019. I thougt it was going for a bull run as I was getting HYIP in speculations that made me decide to invest more. However, it was not and the result of that investment was devastating. If only I learn to hold and control my emotions then I could still possibly had the coins and even earn a bit on it now. That was one of the hard lesson to learn including the  networking scam that I was been into scam too. So sad that it happen to myself but then again I am still wanting a comeback to get back the losses in a better way of achieving it.

I believe this could be helpful for some people here on this forum as I falled into shitcoin trap. I could not believe I can lose my whole fund in just a little time and I want to use this forum to advice the newbies to be careful of shitcoins. I hope you all know how dumped price can wreck the funds of people that invested in such coin.

The coin was METP, I invested at the price of $0.0004 some weeks ago, but the coin is now at $0.000002, I invested $100 and it has now vanished, I do not even have $1 remaining again and it was a lost that really depressed me.

Recently, I checked the price since when it was launched in 2019, it was $0.01245, it has been fallen since after even till now, if I has first analysed the coin, I will not not fall into the trap, but I have no idea about analyses at the time.

I will advice people to analyse market and the coin that want to be used to trade or invest before buying such coin because some coins are just existing to take away your money before it becomes fully dumped.
I really lost from this coin called Metaprediction. From that time till now, I no longer invest on any coin below first 50 on coinmarketcap.

I guess most of us already lost of bitcoins due to lack of knowledge at the beginning. Only few lucky people who manage to survive in the early stage without losing any assets.

I invested a lot of time, effort and money on giveaways during my early days of cryptocurrency and manage to save 0.1 bitcoins but it turns into a scam. That's the time where the value of bitcoin is low and it's not yet popular in the public.

That's the reason why you need to gain knowledge before enterting a complex thing like cryptocurrency because you don't know what will happen to you. Well, that experience will serve as a lesson for me to not trust any platforms and should always observe and investigate the legitimacy of it.

My story is a somewhat happy one, before ever earning any amount of Bitcoin I already was a member of this forum, and I'm an individual that's always ready to follow legitimate instructions. So I knew early that coins are better offline (either hw wallet or a cold storage in another device), I never downloaded wallets from any source other than the official website, my seeds were always safely written down, I didn't talk to people about my btc and all the modus operandi of scammers I knew by reading the posts of others. I was enthused and scared with the notion of being my own bank, so I had no option but to inculcate the btc principles in me.

That being said, I already had a strong Bitcoin background through this forum before I started accumulating, and that's why till date I haven't lost any of my Bitcoin asset to scammers. I wanted to try out trading at one point, but learning it takes good amount of knowledge to do so, I chose to rather invest whilst I study how to trade (which I'm still doing); my only losses in cryptocurrencies btw have come with buying some shitcoins with my money (I've never traded my Bitcoin for shitcoins) and they turned dead coins.

Is cloud mining even a thing today? I can't even imagine a legitimate cloud mining project without it being some kind of ponzi scheme.

yes it is still a thing that scammers use to make money from gullible newcomers.

theoretically cloud mining makes sense to sell the hashrate one has in small increments and use the funds to expand the operation and share the profit with the "investors". but in reality they always end up not making enough profit or even losing some money and to increase their profitability they start selling fake hashrate (aka turn into Ponzi).
of course legitimate ones existed before. there were those cloud mining services that didn't take that last step and simply shut down their business like cex.io mining farm back in 2015.

At this moment all my wallets are empty and becouse i am safe but i leave my private keys on about 100 places which are mostly uchecked. My state of wallet will change in some time i thinking to format everithing and change all important private keys for a start. Is there scams in which scamers plant a bag somwhere inside wallet for later use?
why put the peivate key in 100 places? it would be very risky to be hacked with multiple copies in various places. While it makes it easier for you not to lose your private key, it is also more dangerous because of too many copies. I copied the private key in only 2 places online and offline. I also prioritize online private key security, by providing password protection to be able to access it, it will be safer than using 100 different places.

When I started to join this forum and got to know cryptocurrency, there were a number of events that made me lose some of my assets such as downloading a fake wallet which made my bitcoins disappear, but only in small amounts. I've also been stuck on a phishing wallet website and stupidly, I entered my private key, but the assets that were lost were only a few coins that I got from the bounty I was working on.

Many experiences of losing bitcoin assets and other assets when I was on this forum. several events made me more alert and careful so that there was no incident of losing the assets that I had collected. Currently there are many scammer attempts to steal someone's assets very easily by taking advantage of the owner's negligence. Everything can be a phishing website, malware, fake wallets, shitcoin investments etc.

It's funny this came up as a topic but then, it's important to share your story, it would serve as a guide to a large extent and with the minions of complaints and scam related topics on our boards, I really expect series of responses from a lot of victims. In my case, I haven't lost though and hope not to. At least, not to these scammers or ponzi's and there schemes. That's probably because, I've kept a believe I've got a lot to learn about taking risk and risk management. Investing is not a problem but, investing on the right platform and being able to quantify the return that suits your investment is. Aiming too low is kind of unsatisfactory but aiming too high might get scammed.

I know about bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies 11 months ago, it was a great achievement for me, all the money I have ever made in my life are from cryptocurrencies. 100% of the money are made from bitcoin businesses. But, during the money making process, I made few mistakes too and this made me lose some amount of money (cryptocurrencies).

The first mistake I made was when I traded bitcoin for a shitcoin on an exchange, promising 10% daily profit, not knowing it was a scam. I remembered I invested $42 on the coins, I invested it for a month. After a month, I lost and cash out $18 as the whole total. This was a big loss on my side.

The second mistake was still on another exchange, I bought a coin at $50, the price of the coin later falled more than 12x. The coin was later delisted on the exchange.

My third mistake was when I wanted to buy a shitcoin on an exchange, Instead to have used tether, doge or low value coin to have traded it, I used bitcoin, my $50 worth of bitcoin turned to less than $0.005 worth of bitcoin immediately after the trading.

The forth scam would have been from bitcoin generator scam, it would have actually be the first scam, I just started to know about cryptocurrencies that time, 11 months ago. I registered on one pay-to-click site to earn around 8 satoshi per each click, directing me to another site per each click, I was later directed to a bitcoin generator site. In less than 30 seconds, the site displayed it is mining bitcoin for me, it later displayed 0.005 btc have been mined, that I should pay 0.002 btc to a certain given bitcoin address. But thank God, I have no money nor bitcoin at the time. But, if I have bitcoin, I would have fallen for the scam.

I still have many other scam experiences but these are the ones I remembered.

I lost my bitcoin that I invested using my school allowance to a person I thought as a mentor and a brother to me in this bitcoin community. Even though it is just a small quantity of bitcoin, still, that money came from my parents in which I managed to save for the sake of slowly accumulating in the long run.

I lost my bitcoin because I invest some in the HYIP website.
I don't know much about HYIP, and I send some amount to that site because I think I can double my bitcoin quickly.
But that is just a dream because the next day, the website can not be accessed, and nothing I can do in my account.
Besides getting lost in HYIP sites, I also lose the money in a fake "cloud mining," and I only think about how much bitcoin I will get in some months later.
It's a sad story, but that is an important lesson for me because I am trying to check and research more to find the truth after that.

My story is simple - I've lost some amount of bitcoins due to being new and lack of knowledge. Now I'm experienced with "not your key, not your bitcoins". My story is described here. In short - I did not know how bitcoin transaction fees are calculated and about input/output. Also online wallet "helped" me with it with their weird and misleading UI.

Until people just hold Bitcoins, they dont face any losses (except price loss), when they start to sell them or transfer - there they might face some consequences.

Sometime in 2016 I deposited 0.01 BTC into a "cloud mining" website knowing fully that it was very very likely to be a scam. Why did I deposit 0.01 BTC to that site?

1. I had literally ZERO responsibilities in 2016; I could go crazy with my money and I wouldn't be affected much in the short-term.
2. For shits and giggles.
3. That 0.01 BTC was like $10 back then lol. (though now the 0.01 BTC is worth approximately $100 so I regret it quite slightly)

I want to ask all of you guys, have you lost some amount of BTC due to negligence or being a victim of some fraud. Please, let's talk about only BTC and our own experience.

You can speak out your experiences that you would normally not say out loud in the public.

Looking forward to hear some stories, let's be nice to each other and educate each other to become smarter.

Mine was due to negligence I lost my my password and  id that I created in blockchain.com I have $20 worth of Bitcoin price of the coin back then I'm trying to retrieve until now but so far no luck I guess it's lost forever, I made sure now that the private keys, seeds and passwords are all protected in a place that nobody can snoop.

<…>Investments is fake shitcoins <…>
These don’t fall under the category of the thread’s heading (namely about losing BTC), but you can see these types of investments as a loss of opportunity for having gained Bitcoin. I more or less consider myself sound, and rather prudent where I place my savings. Nevertheless, I did succumb to the ICO hype, and placed some bets on all the wrong places (as if there were many ICOs that weren’t at the time). What didn’t turn out to be a worthless token, turned out to be a quick exit scam.

Regardless of all that you read on each ICO, the aftermaths goes to show that things moved too fast, reviews were shallow in investigation and overly hyped (and likely paid for), and one is certainly not as lectured as one would have thought in scrutinizing the prospects …

Sadly I lost my first bought BTC because of transaction fees, it was more than $10 fee at that moment, and I only bought $20 IIRC Grin
It was the worst day to get introduced to Bitcoin.

Perhaps this scenario should be mentioned on the OP because probably in the peak of bull-run, many newbies lost their first bought BTC because of absurd fees.

I'm one of those victims of fake exchanges. This was advertised on twitter. I saw it that we can buy a coin to that exchange for only 1 satoshi each. And soon we will be able to sell it on an exchange for a way higher price, particularly with a base price of an ICO of 100 satoshis. So, I tried it, just used invested only 25,000 satoshis because I am just trying it and I am afraid of getting scam for investing huge amount of money. So I bought all of  those 25k sats, waited for days, weeks, and monhts... but then one time I saw that the balance was gone because the coin was delisted on that "fake echange". The  coin wasn't even listed on other exchanges.
I used those 25k sats to buy waves, send those waves to the exchange to be able to buy those ICO coin.
That's when I lost my small investment, but this become a lesson.

Coin name : YGold
Where I bought the coins:  waves.exchange
Exchange that they said where Ygold will be listed soon: Yobit.net

Luckily I haven't lost my bitcoin to any of your listed ways but that doesn't mean I haven't lost bitcoin entirely. Infact any enthusiast currently in the space at one point or another have lost Bitcoin, the most common has to be via trading. Most time we trader make profit in USD per se but actually are losing our sats. Which means it would had been more profitable/idea to just hold our bitcoin and make that profit without risking anything as the moment you send your coin to a exchange (especially centralized ones) you risk getting screwed.

As for the other means that involves clear scam, that I haven't fallen victim doesn't mean I'm immune but with few precautions you can keep your funds safe. Avoid any free money event like airdrop, giveaways etc and you will reduce the success rate of getting scammed by those scammers using that means and if you must participate get the link via an official social media handle or website.

Typically, when you make the security of your funds your number priority, you'll be very vigilant that this cheap scams would hardly take advantage of your ignorance.

anybody who has ever done any trading on centralized exchanges has already lost money to these exchanges scamming them. you have to be super lucky to have used them and not lost anything ever.
i have lost coins in many exchange scams but always small amounts: c-cex, cryptopia, bter btc-e and yobit are small exchanges that i've lost coins on. and the biggest one was bittrex where they scammed us by mass closing accounts overnight and stealing any balance we had there.

Right now I didn't experience having trouble with my bitcoin and another kind of transaction-related on this coin because I made all of the transactions safer and avoid getting into a platform that is not secured and not will direct to my wallet one of the examples is mixers.

But I lose some ripple or xrp because I try to make a deposit into an exchange with the use of other exchange I just want to transfer my funds and the cause is they hold my transaction and brings back the funds again.

Well, most of us must have our own share of bitter victim stories.

However, I'd like to believe that I am not as careless as other people to have sent BTC to a wrong address or logged in to a phishing site or downloaded and deposited funds to a fake wallet. I was a victim of neither of them.

But I was an unfortunate victim of investment scams, not just once or twice but thrice. Well, I was in a hurry to make money and experience a better life. Little did I know that it was this same desire that would burn my hard-earned money. It's sad, but greed must be one weakness of a man like me.

The same greed was the reason why I've made losses in trading and altcoin investments.

But I've learned my lessons of course, which is the most important point.

It is not new that we make mistakes here and there. The main cause of these mistakes is lack of knowledge. No matter how smart we are, there are always people that will try to trick us into getting us deceived.
When I was still new on crypto. I am vividly looking for a cool sideline online, I cant say I lose bitcoin but I wasted time on some crypto giveaway that isnt for real. There is a post Ive saw last week about that kind of scheme where you need to do captcha and complete a 40 referrals before getting rewards but to know its just a trick ath the end even not completed it. Totally wasted my time at all.

Most of my bitcoin loses came from investment. Before I was too scared to put up money on altcoin trading but Im starting to grasp the way to earn step by step.

Loosing and getting scammed in the crypto game is significant story to tell which makes us  stronger, I don't really think a user escapes all of these and became strong itself. Its just a step for wiser investing and nice picking.

I have lost many sum of btc and altcoin during the time of my beginning, heavily misplaced private key containing $220, I have crazy and felt disappointed, I even fell into ponzi scheme pyramids where I lost huge sum too.
I think I am strong enough to overcome any sort of scam tricks, fake giveaways, fake wallets.

It happened 2 times, but luckily even in today's prices it was small amounts. First time, I put 0.005 BTC that I claimed from a faucet in early days to some exchange to trade alts and later it pulled an exit scam - this was in 2014. Then in 2016 when I became interested in crypto again I invested 0.01 BTC in a scam ICO. So, what you can learn from it is that a lot of services in crypto ecosystem can be scams, even if at the first glance they look totally legit. Always think twice before depositing your coins, you might never see them again.

I have only temporarily lost my Bitcoins for years. I lost access to my Blockchain wallet without any way of recovery - I had no seed, no backup phrase, nothing. Blockchain's support obviously answered my e-mails by telling me they don't hold my keys, so there was nothing they could do. Turns out I had the initial backup on one of my very old e-mails, and that's how I recovered it. The thing I learned is... not your keys, not your BTC. Expect this unfortunate thing to happen at any point without precaution. Wink

I haven't been a victim of any hack or phishing so far but I lost some bitcoins by investing in altcoins back in the day. What happened was, the coin I bought in the exchange got delisted while my sell order was still there  Grin I wasn't able to check in time to withdraw.

I'm also not sure with my Hitbtc and Livecoin accounts. I don't know if they deleted it for whatever reason. I remember I bought coins in there using btc but I can no longer access my exchange accounts. I didn't bother contacting support since the coin's value is really low now. Not worth the effort.

Hello,

Nowadays, we all use crypto and make a couple of transactions every other day, be it to deposit our BTC to some exchage, withdraw it from there, send to someone, or for some other service.

It is not new that we make mistakes here and there. The main cause of these mistakes is lack of knowledge. No matter how smart we are, there are always people that will try to trick us into getting us deceived.

To name a few, we are all aware of things like :
  • Fake Wallets
  • Ponzi Schemes
  • Fake Giveaways
  • Phishing Attempts to get us deceived
  • Being a victim of some hack
  • Investments is fake shitcoins and other fake websites

I have many threads today where have lost BTC due to unforced errors, which was mistake on thier part, few for getting deceived and tricked by someone so as to gain access over thier assets.

I know it doesn't feel good to get scammed and the feeling of it sucks. I have seen many people just register and complain about a issue in a single thread and vanish from the forum.

To start off, I will write my own story, very long time ago, when I was significantly new to this environment, I had small amount of BTC with me which I sent to wrong address by mistake. Till date it is still on that address. I did scratch my head as to why wallet hadn't recieved it at that time and found that I had just misplaced on word after a lot of research Tongue . It was a small amount and since then I have been extra careful even while copy pasting addresses.

Thank you
