If you encrypt your wallet.dat with very strong passphrase, you may send it to yourselves as email attachement for backup purpose

Backup is the rule. 1 backup @home and one offsite.
Keeping backup near your computer is the same as no backup.

Yes, but have cases that home user don't make backup and lose all data...

What happens if I lose a Hard Drive?  The one with the 'wallet' on it?  Then I lose whatever Bitcoin I've got?

Make sure you have several back-ups of your wallet.dat file of you will lose everything.

You should make a backup of the wallet onto USB stick or other medium.  Once you've backed it up, the balance will always be protected unless you add new addresses to the wallet.  Some of the wallet clients add addresses automatically, so you have to be careful about that.

With the current version of Multibit, you can create as many addresses as you think you'll want, then back up the wallet, and you'll be all set.

Is it possible to have some sort of address containing all your currency for you to redeem at another wallet in case your HDD fails? Or is all your money lost if your HDD fails and you cannot recover the necessary files?
