Maintaining a constant temperature is probably better than letting it cool down every now and then. Lead free soldier does not thermal cycle well at all. Always on with fan recommended.
What happens if you don't have enough airflow? I figured there were engineered to be just used with the heatsink, but I don't see a reduction in performance even after they've been running at full power for 24 hours (I do take them off for a few minutes a day while I'm rebooting my computer etc just to give them a break)
I think the lifespan of the ASIC will be reduced. But it's to early to know...

Yes, you DO NEED some airflow. I have 2 CPU fans blowing directly my 2 USB Gizmos and now they don't go higher than 40ºC. But with that ARCTIC Breeze Mobile (or another equivalent), it will stay fixed to the same HUB you are using for the USB Gizmos.

As the BE100 ASIC ship is the one who has more thermal emission and measures 6x6mm, the best heatsink of the kit is the Voltage Regulator Heatsink (8x6x5mm). But as the 8x8x5mm LAN heatsink also fits in the space, I'll use it for the ASIC of my second USB Gizmo.
I will glue those heatsinks directly on the ASIC's with the included thermal tape.

You could use an infrared thermometer like this.

So my ASIC USB Erupter gets very, very hot. If i want to manipulate it physically in any way after it's been running I have to spray it with canned air first. The current usb extension cable I have for it was bad so I can't put it inside my case (where all the fans are) until a later date, but that would also defeat the purpose of me having this as a decoration.
I am wondering if letting it get this hot is a problem. It's not overclocked or anything, just very hot to the touch.
And if it is, should I just schedule it to take breaks throughout the day? Maybe 5 minutes every hour? Or just 20 minutes at night so it's not running 24/7?
