Is mining bitcoins really dead? I was thinking of mining but then a friend said it was not worth it. Any suggestions?

It's not dead obviously, but it might as well be to beginners. You need to invest a hell of a lot of money to get into the BTC mining game now. You might as well mine a newer alt coin then exchange it for BTC.
Ok thanks

Hi everyone.  I am also a newbie - just started mining 2 days ago.  I can see that there is a lot to learn with the altcoin mining enterprise.  I have spent quite a bit of time on coinwarz and coinchoose.  Are there other sites that help guide a new miner as to what type of coin to mine?  Does the typical person spend a lot of time researching difficulties, hash rates, exchange prices, orphans, and stales throughout the day or do they mine for a few days and then periodically check to see how successful they were.  It seems like it could be overwhelming to constantly make changes to your altcoin mining strategy.  Any thoughts?
