Prepare for mayhem - a lot of people choose a coin because of the type of blockchain.

Just wanted to know if there is a way to get an old blockchain to a new coin. So, for example, say Bitcoin were to switch to scrypt. How would the devs go about getting everyone's BTC into their wallets? This is hypothetical, obviously. But, in a real world situation, how would you do this?
