for much less than $4K ($2400 to be exact), i would build what i have Tongue

i3 3220T
4 X MSI Radeon HD7970 3GB OC
Corsair AX1200i - the "i" is important, means you get 80 PLUS Platinum to lower electricity cost, without the "i", its Gold only

those cards made it trivial to get a %10 overclock on top of the factory overclock Smiley i ended up shutting it down as it eventually dawned on me that i live in an old house with old electrical cabling and running a server, gaming P.C. AND a 1.1kW miner is likely cause me to become a victim of an electrical fire while i slept Shocked

while it was running (without any optimization i would have done if i continued to use it), I was getting nearly 2.7 GH/s

i don't like the odds but where are you on the planet? i've been unsuccessfully trying to find someone that can house my miner, share the risk by covering electricity and i give them half what it makes

I just bought myself an ASUS Radeon HD7950 "DC2T".

Look at the copper pipes and fans on this bad boy

There are many 7950's on the market, but none of them have such a badass cooling system. Yes - it does take up 3 slots (but that's not a problem with PCI extenders) and yes you'll need 2 PCI-E power connectors per card, but mine runs super quiet and cgminer never needs to take the fans above 20%

I set my cgminer to target-temp 62C and it is humming away at full speed mining without a problem.

For litecoin, and I'd use amazon instead of newegg or tigerdirect because they disable will call on shipments which sucks for me (and it doesn't make sense)

If your idea of a rig looks like this:

Then you can buy this:
AMD x2 270 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005AKK02S
ASRock Extreme 4 970 (AMD) , It's got some built in power/reset button that's perfect for caseless http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004M4N01Q
Raidmax 850W Gold, should drive 3 cards http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058HUQJ0
Some RAM (Could go with 4GB) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QBUL1C
Sapphire 7950 (This model specifically) X3, Sapphire TRIXX allows voltage control which is important http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0098HW1HG
Your choice HDD/OS
4 Pack of fans http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O8I474
3 of these, can get away with others http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ASIMG1A
Cost: ~$1300

From Menards:
Two crates, look in the plastic bin section
#6 x 3/4" Machine Screw , Self Tapping
Wooden dowel
Pack of zip ties

Case Assembly: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=163306.20
Zip tie the two crates together
Cut the dowel to fit across the midsection, zip tie it down

Install your OS, undervolt the cards to 0.975v , run them at 950/1250 and mine using cgminer

$4000 gets you 3 rigs and approximately 4800 kH/s in litecoin. Uses around 600W (I don't have a meter to use)

if you are looking to get some thing now and not play the asic game, i'd look at the FPGAs that are out there and see what works for you. i have two of the cairnsmore1's and i have loved them. but there may be better thing for what you are looking for,

more info on cairnsmore1 https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/cairnsmore1-quad-xc6slx150-board-78239

I've been handed $4,000 and asked to build a rig. If you had to spend somebody elses money to build a rig, and share 50% of the profits for your time, what would you build? I'm a newegg shopper, but I always check amazon and other places for a good deal.

Maybe the idea is to build 2 or 3 rigs... ?

I really wanted to get a butterfly labs 50 GH/s asic miner, but I'm not about to fork over somebody elses money and say we'll get the product in a year, if at all.

I'd post this in hardware, but I'm still stuck in the n00b lounge.

Thanks!
