Actually you don't need to do anything at all and you don't need to message coinmarketcap directly.
I am connected to one of the coinmarketcap developers team and I can tell you that they are looking for exchanges by themself and there is actually nothing that is required from your hence.
On the other hand, you can work on getting more people to use exchange as coinmarketcap are only listing exchanges with X amount of volume or up.

Hire Bitcointalk Camp. Manager @ r7promotions.com
Have you ever asked them what's the reason for your application to be declined?

Message them with any of this:  https://twitter.com/CoinMarketCap
                                            :  https://www.facebook.com/CoinMarketCap

If they insist not to disclose any reason, though coinmarketcap is very popular don't stick with them there are other crypto market cap websites that you can be listed.

The most effective way to link your (own?) exchange is to contact someone from the coinmarket team to ask what are the requirements or what to do to link your exchange to their group, since google does not provide much information about this matter, I wish you goo luck.

How to list my exchange in Coinmarketcap?

Has been submitted many times. Every time they failed to pass, and no explanation was given. Just a simple phrase "does not meet the standard"

Does anyone know? Or what is the inside story? Need to pay?

I saw a lot of communication above and the transaction volume was not high.

If there are known friends, you can tell me the method will be greatly appreciated
