On OS X wallet.dat is usually located in ~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/

Use Shift-Cmd-G in Finder and paste above path to get there.

It's likely that your wallet.dat will be a hidden file on Mac OS.  You will have to go thru a process which includes showing these hidden files if you would like to back up before you install.

Or you could just use the "Backup Wallet..." option in the "File" menu.

You'd still need to go through a process to figure out how to recover it if you find a recovery is necessary, but backup shouldn't need to be difficult.

normally you just need to intall the new bitcoin version over the old one and all will be ok. to backup you wallet, just click on the menu "File -> Backup wallet..."

It would be VERY WISE to backup your wallet before upgrading just in case something goes wrong.

As a matter of fact, it would be VERY WISE to backup your wallet on a regular basis (perhaps every 25 transactions or so) and keep at least the 3 most recent copies stored somewhere off your computer.  If your computer crashes or is destroyed, those coins could become permanently lost if you don't have a good backup.
