If you have one of 17 words... then try here: https://blockchain.info/wallet/forgot-password

That is the password recovery for blockchain.info legacy wallets...

The 18 word one should be BIP39... which derivation paths have you tried?

Thanks, this is helpful.

I actually have two wallet word phrases written down, one of 17 words and one of 18 and i'm unsure which it is so trying them both.

Have tried the 18 word phrase with BIP39 in electrum with no joy so maybe it is the other one, but that would have to be a blockchain info phrase so maybe it isn't' that one either.

For Multibit Classic I would have had to export private keys when I still had the laptop, which I didn't.

Thinking I may have exhausted all possibilities, unless anyone has any other suggestions?

MultiBit Classic doesn't use recovery mnemonic's (aka wallet words)... the only "backup" option for MultiBit classic was exporting your private keys. Refer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaijbTcxsv8

Exactly how many words do you have in your recovery phrase? If it is 18, it is most likely a BIP39 mnemonic and should be able to work with Electrum (you just need to click "Options" on the seed input window, and select "BIP39 seed")... if it is 17, it might actually be an old legacy blockchain.info recovery phrase.

No, it doesn't have to be Electrum... Electrum is just the easiest for MultiBit HD as it allows you to specify the Derivation Path. The only other wallets I know of that use the same derivation path as MBHD are both mobile wallets ("Breadwallet" iOS/Android and "Simple Bitcoin Wallet" Android only). For MultiBit Classic, as you have the private keys, you should be able to import or sweep into almost any wallet you want.

If you have the transactionID, you can put it into any block explorer (like www.blockchain.info) and it will show you the transaction details.

Thanks for your help.

I believe I have tried exactly this and it didn't work so I may be doing it wrong.

Can you restore a Multibit Classic Wallet in the same was and would that use the same m/0' derivation path?

Does a Multibit Wallet HAVE to be restored in electrum, or can I use a different wallet?

I've still got the transaction number on a receipt, can I search the blockchain for this transaction?

You should also note, that if that was a MultiBit HD wallet... you will need to use the derivation path of: m/0'

I sent it to a Multibit Wallet on the stolen laptop. I’ve seen Multibit has since stopped being supported. Will it be possible to recover this wallet? I’ve got the private key and a code word phase about 17 or 18 words long.

I’ve tried to restore through electrum wallet but think perhaps it might pre-date the BIP 32 seeds it asks for as I set up the original wallet in 2014.
No, you are just restoring it incorrectly. First of all, what you have is a BIP 39 mnemonic, not a BIP 32 seed. However Electrum does not use BIP 39 by default. To tell it to use BIP 39, you must click the Options button and choose the BIP 39 checkbox. Then it should work.

A few years ago I bought some BTC from a Bitcoin ATM but inadvertently sent it to a laptop that I had been stolen. It wasn’t much money at the time so I cursed my mistake and moved on but would like to try and recover that wallet now.

Are there any other up to date wallets I can use to try and recover?
