You should look into Armory so that your wallet is encrypted and you can also make a paper wallet with it.  Print up a bunch of copies of your wallet and store them in your real wallet, the mattress, in a book, etc..

Using online wallet is a disaster waiting to happen...

If you properly backup your wallet.dat file (and remember to update the backup if you receive btc with new addresses) it's fine.

ive been afraid to use online wallets since that whole catastophe with a major online wallet a few months back, can't quite remember the name of it though. all i remember is that it was bad and made the value of bitcoins drop from 13 bucks slowly down to 1 dollar (wish i had bought a load when they were a dollar!) and now back up to like 5 bucks a coin :O

As long as you still have your wallet you should be fine, they're not just going to "miss" and disappear.

Yes but Gavin, my main issue here is that BTWALLET Crashed while it was downloading the new blockchain, which im guessing has my transaction of 100 bitcoins. I do not want to lose these! Will this affect my ability to receive them?

Blockchain corrupted, not a problem, just delete and redownload it.

Your bitcoin are in wallet.dat, wich is fine.

Oh and backup wallet.dat.

So basically, what has happened is, without my knowledge, my computer was restarted and now my bitcoin wallet won't open. I was in the middle of receiving 100 bitcoins (at about 96%) and now BITCOIN WALLET WILL NOT OPEN. WTF. it keeps saying "btindex.dat" failed to open, and now im crying, because that 500 dollars worth of bitcoins are not mine, but my responsibility and i just got effed in the a by this btindex.dat SHENANIGANS. I've tried following all fixes on this but nothing is working. Also, are my bitcoins just stuck in limbo? Am i royally screwed right now? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME! Sad
