@Grinder and dikitera:

You guys didn't read my second post, or at least not correctly.

The PCIe slot is problematic.

I've two graphic cards (Radeon HD 5970). Both work properly in the second slot, neither do in the first one (the one close to the CPU, in which the card was when the incident occurred).

I've yet to try to overclock them again (I think I'll use an Arctic cooler before I do more experiments).

But my current worry is the PCIe slot. It divides my hashing power by two...

Dude...same issue with me. Cranked up my 5850 to higher clocks like 950 then to 935-925 and i also had those black outs, then fan maxing out....happened 15-20 times before the card got b0rked. Still works, but even at lower clocks(default) it sometimes does the blinking.

I am sorry to say this, but the card is physically damaged, not software. Actually, try OCCT in Error mode with the 5970...if you get errors, you screwed up the card.; very rarely is a slot the cause of a problem.

No smoke without fire? Sounds like something got properly burned if it doesn't even POST. Unless you've flashed the bios it's not the card but Linux that remembers the overclocking, so it won't be overclocked before X starts.

After some fiddling it appears that the PCIe 16x port is the source of the problem...

I can use the Radeon and another card on the second port (it is a Crossfire MB), but the first one seems dead.

Any idea of the cause?

well, you smelled something, so i guess it is toast.

I possibly fried a Radeon 5970...

I overclocked (under Linux) it to 800 MHz. It blanked after a few seconds of mining and the fan kicked in at max speed.

I (quickly) rebooted the computer and did what I thought would turn overclocking off:

aticonfig --od-disable

After several seconds, I got a message announcing that overclocking was off. I relaunched poclbm but the hash rate was too high, meaning that it was still running at 800 Mhz.

Same scenario as before (black screen, loud fan). I was a bit slower to reboot. Probably too slow. A subtle but alarming smell came out of the card.

Now, the card doesn't POST and the fan runs constantly at max speed.

I've booted the machine with another graphic card. aticonfig doesn't find anything. I'm afraid it's toast  Undecided.

Any advice?
