Follow me on a hypothetical. Let’s say someone has $100,000 in the bank but lost trust in the financial system as a result of the unprecedented US Government Bailout and just thought that the whole banking system was run by a bunch of criminals and phonies. Let’s call this person Holden. Fed up with the phonies, Holden decides one day to withdraw his entire $100,000 in savings and take it out in cash. After a few frantic phone calls, Holden’s banker liquidates his account and delivers one thousand crisp $100 bills. Holden stuffs the bills in his backup, gives the banker the finger, and promptly walks out.

Suppose Holden has to walk through some known drug neighborhood on his route back home and gets stopped by a cop on the way. Naturally, the police officer is curious about the contents of Holden’s backpack and eventually convinces Holden to let him look inside. The cop sees the cash, reads Holden his rights, and puts him in handcuffs. Holden tries to explain the cash by saying that he believes that the banking system is phony and so he decided to close out his bank account. The cop chuckles and says, “tell it to the judge.”
