I say it's totally worth it. you can get those lorex wireless cams and monitor from any mobile device.
If you live in sketchy neighborhood, it is definitely worth.
All the ones I see the video quality appears to be shit. What do they cost for a decent one? This is a discussion not a 'too cheap' scenario. Spend 10k to not see shit sounds like a bad idea.
Its definitely worth it just for the peace of mind alone.
depends what your areas like and how paranoid you are, you can pick ones up from most electronic stores that do android and iphone apps between $50 and a few hundred $$$ all depends what your after most people just cover the outside of the house with 2-4 cams and thats them sorted.
id recommend CCTV, its also easy to setup and most people can do it within and hour or 2 just research what you need/want find a good compromise and your sorted

So regular alarm system doesn't seem ideal.
Do any of you have Video systems that you can pull up on your iphone/android and check on your place when not home?
I have a buddy who's a retired engineer that would help me install the system. Would you get one if you had a little kid at home, wife, and had to travel 3-5 days of the week?
Video cams might be a deterrent plus if you can easily see it on your phone plenty of time to get up stairs to the shotty
