Tails to minimize risks of leaks, ideally you can also use VPN as a wrapper around Tor traffic for ultimate protection. Store all your files encrypted, generate unique passwords for all sites and store passwords and your GPG key(s) safely with KeePassX.

Honestly, it depends on how anonymous you really want to be.

I'd start by using a live CD/USB so there is little (if any) physical traces of data left on a machine.
Find a decent firewall, learn to configure it properly.
Always use encrypted communications (HTTPS/SSL) where possible.
TOR is alright as long as you don't mind the exit node seeing all your data.
Just keep searching online and you'll find so much information you won't know what to start with.

Also, if you want to go tinfoil-hat, look into buying a TEMPEST-approved monitor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempest_(codename)

No shit, I'm wondering if anyone has some good guides.  I'll do some searches as well, but if someone already knows a good source to learn about it I'd like that.

I love technology....

TOR + Bitcoin = super easy to be anonymous and keep the internet life separate if you want

I'm just digging into creating a secure online presence, any suggestions for what to look into?

Currently I know I need to find out more about GPG and how all that works.  Never used it, but I need to learn it.  Any good suggestions for where to look?
