You can convert your usd in your bitcoin wallet but there are fees that will be deducteed in your money and the convertion depend in this exchange rate in the site but i guess better ways in put your altcoins in a trading site and then in there you can exchange your altcoins in bitcoin and also you can trade them if you wanted.
yes for every transaction you have to pay the fee, and the exchanges are now increase the fee from time to time and making it now difficult to make small transaction. for example if am sending less than 0.005 satoshi i have to pay as doubt the fee as compare to the sending amount.

Just move your altcoins to an exchange that trades your coin and sell it for BTC. To find the exchanges that trade your coin, go to coinmarketcap.com, find your coin, goto the main page for your coin (not the list of all coins) and click on markets and it will show all the exchanges that trade it.
yes exchange is the only way through which you can change your Etherium for BTC and BTC for Etherium. but the most important think is to select a trusted exchange for that.

But how do I change it on Bittrex?

Do I need to trade on the charts or can I just swap the alts for BTC?

You can use https://shapeshift.io

But do first have a look at their exchange rates and compare that with the fees you'll pay for selling the alts on Poloniex or Bittrex.
I do not know for sure, but I suspect that it would be cheaper to just sell the alts for bitcoins on the exchanges.

I have an account at Bittrex and Poloniex.

The altcoins are at Bittrex.

Which part do I go to, to do a simple exchange, rather than having to trade to get it converted?

I have some minor altcoins in my account balance.

Where do you have a account ?

Where is your account balance?

assuming you have them on an online exchange
you can just exchange them into bitcoin there....

Correct, and if so the OP already know how to trade because there are altcoins and usd on that account.

How do I change that for Bitcoin?

Also, I have USD in my account balance. How do I change that to BTC so I can use that BTC to trade?

I guess you have those altcoins in an exchange? If you don't, find an exchange which accepts the coin you have. Send your coins to that exchange and trade it/buy bitcoins with it.
You can buy btc with your USD the same way as alt. Just look for something like btc/usd.
