The contextual search in the upper right searches the board you're on and all subboards. If this results in more than 5 boards, but less than all boards, then you get that error (recently-added for performance reasons).

If you want to search the entire forum, you can go to the search page or to the front page. The limitation I added is that you can either search all boards, or limit it to 1-5 boards. But you can't limit it to 10 boards, for example.

Anyways this is way to search the forum using forum search engine but everybody agree that forum engine is somewhat fuzzy.
Better to use google search in this forum..

Way to do this kind of search.

1. Go to google.com
2. In google search bar type below
 site :https://bitcointalk.org   Search string

Here you can replace "Search string" with any of your keywords to search

Ok. Maybe it's funny but I use, most of the time, google search with site:bitcointalk.org in order to find relevant threads.
That's exactly what most people do (including myself).

Other than that, you could use the Advanced Search page. But you are still a Newbie, so you have a restriction on how many searchs you can do in a period of time. And this can get annoying pretty quick.

I've tried using the search on the website but it returns a bunch of junk i need to refine through.

How do you search this properly?

For example, I wanted to see if there is a thread on REN nodes. Couldn't find out.
