I think everyone would agree that we need a way to "Down Votes" or Hide threads like this.

I think an up/down vote type thing might do well, but it would also make it harder to follow along with the really current stuff.

Up and down votes could just be bought or sold. Which would be fine if you wouldn't mind a market for such a thing.

Hell, anyone with a grudge or just in the mood to do so could give down votes for the hell of it.

As for the question at hand:

I skim four of the main sections on every visit, and a couple others every once in a while. The others I don't read unless someone points me to a topic there. I check my "show new replies to your posts" a lot.

That is about the same thing I do. Easy enough to filter things out by skimming and staying away from the sub forums that don't interest you that much and ignoring anything else.

You should be able to change the sorting options by clicking the column headers, not sure what's wrong. Also, isn't there a couple options to control sorting in the control panel?

felonious vagrancy, personified
With no way to sort post by start date,
what I see again and again,
The same 20 threads with 50+ post that changed subject ~12 time.

Yeah, web-forum interfaces just do not scale.  Period.

We need a simple, stable forum API so people can come up with innovative interfaces tailored to the needs and reading habits of different kinds of users.  Expecting the person operating the forum to meet the UI needs of every single user is pretty silly.

if you like foruming without all the ignorance then ignoring certain people and certain subforums is a very good start.

I think the numbers on these forums are not an accurate representation of current active users.

But then again, there is also less noise in any other Bitcoin forum.
The problem asked is: How do you filter through 500 000 post from 50 000 members, 15 000 noobs, 5 000 trolls, and 10 000 market manipulators.

The place is way too centralized and the software is way too inefficient at managing that amount of content.
I think offloading subs of the forum to other places (niche website with different software) is the best way to go.

For instance I would auction the whole "Marketplace" sub the highest bidder or get rid of it.
Same goes for :

Economics
Off-topic
Politics & Society
Alternate cryptocurrencies

Otherwise, How many man/hrs would it cost to implement crowd filtering over SMF ?

A lot of information about problems with the exchanges gets posted in the Currency exchange subforum of Marketplace and nowhere else.  If Marketplace goes, then it would make sense to create an "Exchanges" subforum under Trading or under the general Discussion forum.  Right now, threads about what's going on with the exchanges can be in any one of those forums and I'm sure that people often miss out on up to date information unless they regularly check all three.

Aggressive use of Ignore Boards.

Thanks, didn't know about that.

Not really what I was thinking, but I guess it's a half-way solution.

Use other forums https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin:Community_portal

I personally have used and can suggest  http://bitcoin.org.uk/forums and http://www.btclog.com/

with http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/ being my true love.

So that is how I manage to read this forum, by making sure I read sane posts where people are actually trying to progress Bitcoin elsewhere.  It isn't as fun though.

+1

Thanks for that, couple of new ones for me there.... I must admit I only read these forums through fear of missing something but any other good source of news etc is most welcome

Can we please make the 'ignore' button also hide the ignored user's threads?

The next forum software is required to have a watchlist feature, which I think will help a lot.

Later on other ways of viewing topics might be added. For example, topics could be viewed in a strict chronological order without bumping so you don't miss any topics. You could also maintain a list of people you like and have topics they post in highlighted.

I don't like global ratings (like Reddit). While I agree that these communities are often fun, it is difficult to express controversial opinions with such systems.

I do visit these regularly but there are no alternatives in term of size.

The other forums are totally dead by comparison. It's unfortunate, because there is waaaay too much garbage here. I think an up/down vote type thing might do well, but it would also make it harder to follow along with the really current stuff.

How to you guys follow what's going on at this forum ?

The amount of noise is unbearable,

I am convinced that this poor forum is what hinder Bitcoin development the most.

I think everyone would agree that we need a way to "Down Votes" or Hide threads like this.
