I have managed to reset my bios to factory defaults a few times accidentally while using a screwdriver. CMOS reset is nearby on the Asus Z270 mobo.

Still waiting for the slow boat from China to arrive bringing me these: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6705VF5836

Can you beat $0.68 for two switches and two LEDs with leads with free s/h?!

i bought bunch of these, nice and cheap $.4 ea, work just fine

You should configure bios anyways to start as it gets power

Yes, at first I also did power on by using screw driver while waiting for my power button switch like hanskan ordered above to deliver. This is cheap and it will save your hassle and risk.

Gone phishing...
I usually just harvest a power or reset switch from an old case. This would be difficult for those making many rigs, though.

I get these illuminated ones from aliexpress ~$12 for three. Easy to see in the dark and also has a reset and hard drive activity light. Cheap enough and works great.

I bought a 2$ on/off switch and it gets the job done. You can do the same with a screwdriver though

very simple and easy Smiley
Look for the Power Settings menu item within the BIOS ( “Advanced” or “ACPI” or "Power Management Setup" ) and change the AC Power Recovery,  “Restore on AC/Power Loss” or “AC Power Recovery” or "After Power Loss". "On." You are looking for a power-based setting that affirms that the PC will power on when power becomes available.
So after this when you turned off the pc , just turn off a power supply switch for a few second , then switch that switch back , and your pc will turn on as soon as its sense a available power Smiley

This is the real solution to the problem!! Short it out once to get it started, change power settings, and itll come on and off with the power switch on your psu.

What is the best way to start a mining rig without using PC case with power button? I've heard that using items like screwdriver to short power button pins might fry MOBO due statics.

I had this issue too at the beginning because I didn't know where to start the motherboard and I thought that I bought a broken motherboard lol

But after researching in youtube and in google I found that I need tool (A screwdriver) and touch two pins (JP1 in my mobo) and you see the magic Tongue

Been using screwdrivers to sort the pins for well over a decade, NEVER have I had an issue.

Well your a pro....some of us "lower skilled" folks like to buy fancy crap  Cheesy

I've been building HIGH end gaming PCs since 1998,I have never used anything but a jumper wire to start my extra PSUs.

But in 2011 I found folks making these nice switches, and they only cost $5 (or less) with shipping, sooooo  Wink

If you afraid to fry your mobo by using a screwdriver or a clip (or any other metallic object for that matter), just spend 2$ on power button and stay calm.

Power supplies usually have a power switch (commonly right by input power cable socket).
Set your BIOS so that the machine will start on power on then use THAT switch.

Some motherboards have a power switch ON the motherboard (ASRock 970 Extreme4 as an example) though that doesn't seem to be a common thing.

I've never had a motherboard die due to using a screwdriver on the power on pins - they're NOT normally a high impedence input connection subject to static issues - but I won't say it's impossible, and you CAN short stuff out that WILL kill the motherboard if the screwdriver slips at a bad point and hits the wrong spot.

I recommend using a shorting block instead of a screwdriver, if you can't get one of the other options already mentioned to work.

You can also create your own. Buy the cables and the switch.

Refer to your motherboard manual to see where it goes on the motherboard.
