So if DAO is dead why do I still see a lot of DAO signatures all over the forum... trying to revive the coin?

So, I'm apparently very slow at discovering the news that DAO apparently is "dead" (or something like that?) - Yes, I lived under a rock for a while
Anyways, I haven't been following it the past while and now I have about 1000 DAO stuck in poloniex.  What are the steps to convert DAO into ethereum?
Does it convert into ETC or ETH? Or both?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Wow! Where have you been?
The Ethereum DAO Hardfork is one of the greatest tales in Cryptocurrency history.
Definitely up there with the Mt.Gox Insolvency (or maybe even surpassing it depending on its full impact).

This link should help:
http://ethereum.stackexchange.com/questions/7204/how-do-i-convert-my-the-dao-tokens-into-ethers-using-the-withdrawal-contract-aft
I assume you can withdraw your DAO tokens to an outside wallet, then you can do the contract conversion back into ETH.

Also, I think you now have DAO (and DAO classic - ?) tokens which can convert into their respective parent token.
So for example, TheDAO into ETH, and TheDAO into ETC. You need to create two separate wallets and use a split contact
to get 10 ETH and then 10 ETC. You must use a split contract to prevent a replay tx on the other chain
(there are two ethereum chains). It is best to read and study up more before performing the conversions.

Or, maybe if you write a nice letter to Poloinex support, they may do everything for you. Worth a shot.

BTW I do not, nor ever owned any Ethereum tokens, so I only have a basic understand of what I am talking about.
Goodluck getting your tokens back.

If your coins were inside Poloniex when the fork occured, you should have two seperate ETH and ETC balances on the exchange site.

That only applies if the user held ETH on Poloinex prior to the fork.
The OP has stated that they held 1000 TheDAO on Polo, which is different and needs additional steps.
