Hey Bitcointalk'ers

I'm curious to know how important the right '.com' Crypto domain name is to all of you starting projects within this space? I've known clients who have forked between xx,xxx - xxx,xxx on the right domain and i wanted to know how much you would be willing to spend to get that brand you want for your business?

It's very highly valued in fact you couldn't get a good domain name that is crypto related that commands a good price and there are so many crypto domains in .com that are parked waiting for the right buyers and they are selling them for thousands of dollars, for years .com is the most sought after extension check this article to find out why.

Most of the crypto startups use .io domains,so I would say that .com domains aren't important at all.
If you are asking about the brand-well,it's important but the idea behind the project and the dev team are more important.

How do you know for sure the majority of a legitimate crypto startup project is using .io domains, it is based on assumptions or data. Anyway, I'd agree that the ideas and concept behind the project are far more essentials than a domains name. You could achieve better if you allocate a significant amount of fund to research and development sector.

Yeah, there are a lot of examples: Cex.io Purse.io and etc.
Blockchain.info <-- info domain which isn't good but this website is so popular but at the same time they have moved on .com domain
OP you would get best answers on such questions from guys who actively work in seo.
Right .com domain helps you to get better brand acknowledge from people, better positions in search engine and a lot of benefits. Remember .com domain is top one.

Honestly, if you have a very tight budget, and .com domain for your project's name would be quite expensive, it's better to get a cheaper alternative that isn't outright bad, like .io or .net and spend the money that you saved on improving your product or on marketing. I rarely care about domain extensions as long as they aren't the truly shitty one's, and crypto is still a small community with a high percentage of geeks, so most potential users would probably don't mind .io or something like that.
Correct! It do always matter with your product or service that you are offering but i cant really deny the fact that .com domains do really give out better better benefits
when it comes to SEO plus on the other side it do give out that impressions that .com ones are serious and legit service/project etc. but if you dont have the money to purchase on
then there would always be an alternative for us to use and it isnt bad for us to try it because there are really things which cant be attained so easily.  Cool

I'd be prepared to spend at least a couple thousand dollars on it, depending what the domain is of course.
I definitely wouldn't go 5 figures just on the domain name, that kind of money can be spent better than that.

While it's true that a .com has a bit of an advantage with regards to SEO, I think the difference with other domains is negligible.
I personally wouldn't mind too much opting for a .io

Personally I think everyone tends to trust more the websites that have a .com domain just because most of the crypto projects have a .io domain and it just looks better when you see .com
If you cannot find a .com domain available for your desired name of the website then try and find a name that's similar to that but it doesn't changes the idea. If you have already chosen a name and you really want to stick to that either because it's you like it or it is representing your project then I think you should go with whatever domain you find. Just be sure to not choose domains like .xyz because those are the ones that look suspicious and people tend to avoid

I don't think .com is so relevant, at least for a start-up. I used to invest in .com domains in the past, and I made a few decent sales but I stopped doing it as the market became more illiquid with the upcome of all the new TLDs. Nowadays only <4-letter .coms are liquid and some good buzzwords, and many people (including me) are holding lots of .coms that one day would have been valuable but nowadays nobody wants to buy, even for 2 figures.

The domain .com is powerful and makes a website legitimate in the eyes of web-users. Meanwhile .io originates from "Indian Ocean" .
Although it is associated with software companies and blockchain startups for a lot of years and it has gained validity in this space.

I'd prefer .com for any project that is considered accomplished and I wouldn't mind any domain for startups.

Just focus on your project and keep your budget to marketing instead of paying to domain. Although .com has positive affect on branding .io domains are used widely nowadays and a lot of them ranked number 1 on search engines if it is an authority page. If your project is good, you don't need to worry about serp/seo. Search engines are using lots of factors to determine serp.

Not really, most new projects invent new names that arent standard words and then spend a million bucks trying to promote it. But take a look at crypto.com they spent a million bucks (or more) buying that domain after chasing it for years.. and look how popular it made their renamed coin

If you are asking about the brand-well,it's important but the idea behind the project and the dev team are more important.

Mate, .com domains are called high quality domains no matter what (I know that there are many other premium alternatives available but you can't just ignore the speciality of .com domains).
.com domains are not equally, but highly important and recommended for any and almost all projects to be their first choice before considering any other options.
.com domains are cheaper if we compare good deals over domain brokers and check for the best price.

As Kemarit said, companies unable to find a particular .com domain for their project (as they're specific to the one that suits best to their project but not able to get it due to the same been parked already by someone else or there's already a website over such domain) go for alternatives like .io and many others.

Freebitco.in is one great example which shows that it all depends over time's demand and what the project is about. Sometimes, what we choose as an alternative proves to be better than ^if we'd have gone for that instead of this^ type of feeling.

I believe.com domains are very important and I strongly disagree with davis196
.com domain will give you better SEO (search engine optimization), and your page will be better ranked in Google searches.

Also, it looks like a more serious project, as you clearly invested a lot more.

The problem is that it is more of expensive. Maybe you can't get the best name, but a similar.com one.

You can buy .io etc alternatives and just redirect them to your .com one

As for me, you can go either .com or .io though we know that many of the sites in the cryptocurrency market are preferring the .io domain name. It seems the .io has become very much identified with this industry but of course in terms of SEO maybe .com can be a big advantage. So the idea of having both TLD should be taken wisely. Good luck on your business.

Of course a .com domain will have a lot of weight as compare to let's say .io or .xyz. I guess the move to .io domain was due to that fact that it's either the project names is already taken with the .com and the person behind that is selling it at a steep price or buying a .com for a project is not their goal and go for a much cheaper .io just to save a their budget.

Go for the mainstream site suffixes available as it's just a little bump in terms of pricing. The way I see it there is a certain stigma when seeing a project having their main website ending on a ".io", ".xyz" or some sketchy suffix which we only know are given for free, so as a viewer I see it as the devs are cutting their cost on us which I think is one of the red flags that a website is a potential scam if not are not really serious on the project. For the domain name itself keep it as close as what you company name is as it will be much easier to associate your website to you and to avoid confusion to a lot of people.

.com is definitely important. I myself am starting a few projects and although a lot of websites in the crypto space are .io and similar, the .com is still the best one. It will depend on which type of website, of course. If you need your website to be found, .com is best, if you don't care about that and you have a low budget then .io and others is also acceptable although never better.
