I know there is a ton of discussion about the profitability of FPGAs/ASICS, but my question is: how long will they last? Long enough to be considered completely useless before replacing them?

From what I've read so far FPGA's are now out of fashion. The few web sites that were mentioned as manufacturers are all closed and out of business. Not sure why.
I'd rather spend $200 on something that does 500MH/s and have it TODAY as opposed to a promise for 60GH/s for $1300 which I may get one day ... eventually... when by then it will be worthless.
