Okay a lot has happened in the last 24 hours.

So here goes.  The low clocks here are not to suggest paying 1500 usd for an s9 then run it at freq 400 to keep it quiet.  But it is possible to do it and knowing that will allow for planning you November purchases when it is lower cost for an s9.
 Many free power people need to know their options.

I can run my s9s' at full speed or a notch lower in the solar array as noise is not an issue. But I do free demos on  site time and time again to encourage people to mine.

  Okay went to the solar array climb the ladder 12 times by the time I was done.
My new batch 11 or 10 I think is now sitting next to me. In my den with two good boards inside and one ready to ship to Colorado.

It has no sign of damages but it has a mark on it in pencil that was not on the working boards.

I went to the no warranty end and pushed the board it then slides out on the warranty end



and the dead board is here  look at the mark by my finger a crossed out in pencil or marker



and here is one of the two good boards no gray pencil mark.  my guess is that mark on the dead means a suspect board.
my opinion is this board was a reject and was accidentally placed into production by a careless worker.

External voltage adjustment would probably have only minimal effect on overall efficiency. Perhaps increase the efficiency of the board-level bucks by one or two percent depending on particular implementation, but that'd be the extent of it. Unless the board-level buck output exceeds 11V typically in which case it'd be forced to operate at a lower voltage, but that seems unlikely.

If Phil is unable to replace his S9 board effectively and sends it to me, I'll look into fixing it at getting enough information from it to develop a voltage hack like the S7. I've had an idea for a while, but not been able to experiment with it yet, about a plug-in hardware solution that doesn't require disassembly of the miner.

So is the answer 10 hours? Man that's frustrating, sorry Phil. I hope they sort you out in a reasonable timeframe, though I naturally have my doubts.

I agree with what someone else said, wouldn't you be better off under-volting/clocking an S7 to try to increase the hashrate, rather than neuter a brand new S9 to lower hashrate without improving efficiency?  ROI is difficult enough to achieve with cheap/free electricity and FULL hashpower, let alone under-clocking it without raising efficiency through voltage control.  Do you still have one of our voltage-adjustable DPS-4K setups that was given to you to try to bring the voltage closer to 11.0V to see the impact on efficiency?

So far my only issue has been with my s9 batch-3 at home: A few days ago I got to work and later found that it had gone offline. Got home 6hrs later and all its lights are flashing but was running much cooler. Tried to get into the GUI for a soft boot - unable to connect. Cycled power to it and all is well again.

The mystery is what happened to take it offline? It is powered by an always-online Cyberpower UPS (zero transfer time) that is supplying perfect 120VAC so power glitch is not possible....

So we now have 5 and ⅔ s's and 1 s7 running  we could add two more s9's as the circuits are 20 amp 240

  3 run at about 15-16 amps

so we can max at nine units.

I will post either warranty process on the dead s9 board or I will send it to sidehack to play with.

I actually had the same thing happen to me with a batch 1 s9. left for work all was fine.. came home to find a dead board.

a month later i finally have it back from warranty replacement. not happen on the turn around time but at least i only had to pay for shipping one way, and 0 to fix the board.

Wouldn't it be better to just buy a used S7 and undervolt? The effiency will be 0.20 instead of 0.10 but it will be much cheaper and just as quiet.

I might look into this once all my 280x start using more power mining ETH than mining Bitcoins.

I will pester Yoshi from bitmainwarranty. See what he can do.

No luck with s9 repairs through bitmain warranty, they forwarded my gear to Hong Kong. Hopefully they are able to soon.

Yes, I contacted Bitmain Warranty in Colorado this week regarding my dead S9 board and a bad BB Black board. They said they had no repair parts for S9, but maybe soon.
So I bit the bullet yesterday and sent them both to China. It wasn't cheap. Sad I better get back some fixed (new) parts.



Now back on this date  right here in this quote  I gave them a solution to their warranty problems:

This way  the buyer will not take you up on the warranty problems you have.  Since you don't honor them anyway.

I certainly would rather buy an s-9 with no warranty  and you give me a 10% coupon on my next s-9.
Then no one is in suspense about the warranty.

I would think you see that ETH and ETC are doing pretty well.

Mostly many people like buying from

amd
 nvidia
samsung
western digital

to get mining gear with real warranties.

A very good   eth rig costs less then your s-9 ,uses less power ,earns btc faster , runs quieter, has a real warranty.

I sent this email today.  Notice I said I wanted to avoid shipping to China and that I am willing to forgo the warranty for an s9 board at a fair price.

Looking mighty good there! Give a few more months for temps and pricing to drop and methinks I see one upstairs for the winter Smiley

Get some under volting programming data for these so the fans can be ran even slower/quieter and I see a few more spread around in our offices as well...

I have limits with this psu.

but it ran freq 433 at 37% with good numbers.
 
If these  can under volt like the s-7  a fan speed of 23% is okay sound wise  so if undervolt allows for freq 400 and fan of 20-23% this would be a very good miner for space heating your office.

next is 418 and a fan bump to 35%



420 and a bump in fan to 36%
I am now at 9000 gh + good temps  and the sound is loud in the sense you want it in another room  but once you have it in the room with a closed door and an open window things are good.



425 kept fan at 36%   remember I am using a 1000 watt psu and so far it is doing the job.



next up is freq 429  and will stick with fan at 36%  when weather gets  colder these will get better.  My mining spot/room in the house is 83f

My spacer above asks a good question.  Well  this setting is quiet not silent but quiet.  Good for the dorm room good for an office space heater if the office is not quiet.

This setting pulls under 825 watts at the wall.  means you can use this miner with small 120 volt psu's.

I know it does not seem like it but Fall will be here soon and many people use a miner to space heat.

so lets say you go for 1450-1500 for the lessor model.   this should pay off with free power and 2% jumps in a year.

not quite what someone may want.

 So rather then freq of 350 and fan of 23%

A setting of freq 375 and a fan of 25% or

 a freq of 400 and a fan of 30% ------- starts to be loud

it may be what works for a  free power miner needing quiet mining is a bit  more testing.

setting below is freq 375 and fan of 30% and it is getting louder

freq 400 fan 33%  and the sound would be too loud or loud enough to annoy


freq 404 fan 33% the hash rate and temps moved a bit higher  and of course the sound is too high.  my psu is a 1000 watt plat enermax single rail



freq 406 fan 33% the hash rate  moved up temps are about the same.  This 406 33% setting may be a good for my unit. my psu should hang in until I go to freq 500 ( a guess)


next is 408 setting same 33%  we finally got more heat then I like  97 top temp.


this is a 412 setting and a boost in the fan to 34%  even though I raised fan speed reads the same rpm but hash is up and temps are down.  this may mean rpm gauge on fan is false on 33% setting or 34% setting. this kind of makes testing every freq worth it Grin


here is freq 416 fan at 34% hash rate is almost 9000 but temps went close to 98

Okay  you have an apartment power is included.  Or you have any space in the world  where 'power is free'.

How low does the s-9 go?  Well  the advanced setting will allow for a setting of freq 100 well thats too low.

But  if you set it at freq 375 and a fan of 22% you get good results



the sound level at 22% is very good but it is a little hot with freq 375


I want the sound level that 22% fan setting gives so I dropped freq to 350
So this is close to the practical limit of down clock
