Number of active addresses as an upper limit?
According to a presentation at the Bitcoin conference last year there are about 500,000 users worldwide.
According to https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.1570615 MtGox alone had 311850 customers a few days ago. So most probably the actual number of Bitcoin users is higher than this.

No, there is not a chance. Any such figures are educated guesses at best. Damn anonymity. 
Recently, i read in an news article 100,000. But i think this was only a fictional number.
