I'd say that there are around 1k alt-coins that are actually worth something, I'm not counting the dead ones or the coins that are made to last one day in order for creator to get some money out of it.

Tho there are a lot more and I've seen in service section people offering to make alt-coin for some reasonable price, so basically everyone can have their own alt-coin.

1k? lol not even 100 are worth something, you are overstimating this market, which is full of garbage scam coin, i can only take serious top 10 and a bunch of other altcoin in the top 100, but not all the top 100, every other alt which is announced now it's a copy paste of the good one, i don't even bother anymore

Bitcoin and altcoins are all cryptocurrency so that what they are called cryptocurrency is a virtual or digital money like bitcoin as what you know it is a virtual money have a value, a very high value that almost 2000$ in the crptocurrency it is the most successful or the king in the digital world so other also want success and they created also a copy of bitcoin they are altcoins or alternative coin.

And also coin are mined in the world wide web. Each has its own unique feature depending on what the platform is trying to pursue. Some coins are decentralized and some are centralized. There are other coins which was used for schemes and there are other projects which needs some support and are really legit for investments.

This should help you out: http://mapofcoins.com/

It shows all the forks from varies coins such as Bitcoin, XRP etc. I really love this site.

Yes sadly that page is not updated in last 2 years, but it was put a miracle effort to make it. For some time the site was down and I thought is dead. So right now I am really happy to see it back.   I wish some group of people would take a challenge to update this site with new coins.

Mainly the difference between Bitcoin and all other alts is a mere $500,000,000 in mining machines.
If you visit yobit once you'll understand how many alts there are and they haven't listed every single one of them yet but still you get lag for 2 minutes until all of them are loaded.Smiley

Almost two years ago now i counted well over 6,000 ANN topics here.
Many coins never got one too such as Start Coin.

There is lots we all know that much.

Long ago i suggested the scene just number them..
Shitcoin #3,201
Shitcoin #3,202
and so on..

Because that is technically what they are.

Spoetnik Fun Fact:

There is close to 1 million accounts created here and when ever i look it says only a few hundred are logging in per day.

Know you know !

Why is there altcoins and cryptocurrencies? Am I correct in saying that the only thing that seperates the difference between a cryptocurrency and an altcoin is that everything that isn't bitcoin is an altcoin? Make sense...

there are probably 10k altcoin out there, if we count everything included those many that die quickly in one day, even in 2014 there were already 2k+, it's a good estimate to think that now there are more than 10000, and yes it's correct everything after bitcoin is an altcoin, every altcoin is a fork from bitcoin, but some have other bases, like ETH
