I made some tests with a Z270 and it ended with 9GPUs max
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.33127677

It's not the splitter card or M2-PCIe adapters, its the BIOS and Hi IO lanes of which there are 16 from the CPU, and the chipset use some for other things than Video Cards (Mining cards without video might be possible to add beyond the 9 for this chipset/bios).

That setup have been stable since then btw.

CraptoMillionaire, did you ever find a solution?

I just hit the same problem:

Same Mobo (ASUS PRIME H270-PLUS)
Celeron G3900 2.8GHz
4GB RAM
3x PSU's (linked, working fine)
8x 1070's (+2 new ones)
1-4 PCI-E splitters
Windows 10 (latest updates)

- I have all the correct settings like 4G Decoding, Gen1 (tried Gen 2 also), 16GB Virtual Memory etc.
- 8 cards work fine, but soon as I connect 9th card, it boots into UFEI.
- I've tried moving the PCI-E splitter card around, so the 9th card is in a PCI slot, but no difference.
- Tried adding extra RAM
- Tried new GPU's in old slots, making sure they actually work.
- Turned off other devices in UFEI (ie SATA, sound etc), no difference.

I was confident the Mobo/CPU combo would support at least 16 lanes, more than I planned to use. I figured this would be the next bottleneck?

Could it be Windows 10, do I need Linux?
A bigger CPU or chipset (ie Z270) perhaps?

Anyone else had an issue getting 9th GPU working?

Cheers

Thanks.
Well, I feel a bit ashamed to admit it but it seems I did not try the most obvious solution - switching the splitter into the PCIe x16 spot.  It was always meant to be connected there isn't it? I don't know but this worked for me. Embarrassed
Now I am stuck at adding the 10 card but will keep trying before asking another silly question. Probably a crap NGFF M.2 to PCI-E card?
Thanks a lot ivakar!

Hm.. I can't say for sure if it will support and work good, cause based on my experience with almost similar setup, there could be problems. I have a rig based on Z27o-k mobo with 7x gtx 1070   and one gtx 1080ti. 2x 1070 and 1080ti is connected to mobo through 1x to 4pcie - extension card. I did connected one  more card to it, and it was working but rather glitchy I'd say..  so that is why I removed 9th card.  But it was detectable..
Try set in your bios PCI-E to GEN1 - maybe it would help

Hi guys.
I do apologize in advance for my noobiness but I spent many hours trying and even more hours surfing the internet and still cannot solve my problem.
I am running ethos (updated) on my rig. Recently I got a PCIe to USB 4 port card because now I have more than 8 GPUs. The system is working perfectly with 8 GPUs regardless if I use the card or connect my GPUs to the 6 PCIe and the 2 converted m.2 to pcie slots.
GPUs are 7x1060 3 GB, 1x1080 ti, 1x1070, PSUs are 2xCorsair 850 W, Intel Pentium Dual-Core G4400 3.3 GHz Processor CPU, 4 gig RAM.
Now I cannot for the life of me force the mobo (ASUS PRIME H270-PLUS - latest BIOS) to accept the 9th card. Any of the cards can be undetected, it's not a particular one giving me hard time. I am pretty sure everything is working alright - risers, cables etc. Power is distributed equally between the GPUs too.
I have tried many possible configurations, swapping cards, cables, risers etc. but every single time I end up with one undetected GPU. The funny thing is that normally  the 4 cards connected to the expansion card are being detected, it's the one connected to a PCI slot which is not.
Can you please confirm if this particular mobo can support more than 8 GPUs at all? I know the Z270 can but what about the H270? And if yes any idea how this can be achieved?
Thanks in advance.
