I just read the article saying that the bitcoin network is now more powerful than the top 500 computers in the world... crazy town.
If folding@home was smart they would have created a virtual currency and do the same BS as Ripple is doing, but for a good cause.

You mean do the say thing as in creating a fiat/btc/altcoin trading platform?  I mean, I do think its smart in the sense that they could use it as a reward base to actually pay people for folding.

Are you still mining BTC with GPU? Shocked

Your point about the power of the network is quite interesting. I recall reading somewhere that the BTC network also uses the equivalent of a nuclear power plant in energy. Seems wasteful at first glance, but no doubt even more power is used keeping online payment/ card systems up & running.  Hopefully the ASIC boom will reduce the need for power in the future as well

Well, I had been mining altcoins but since I got the block erupters Ive been pointing all my miners to btc.  I realize not the most profitable at the moment.  Probably able to payoff one of the block erupters in twoish weeks mining btc.

Yeah, I think that same article said that the btc network uses either 200k in power an hour or a day..cant remember, but probably an hour.  I think its only wasteful in the sense that its not accomplishing anything for a "greater good".  Sure creating a decentralized currency is a good thing no doubt. But for the benefit of man kind, I think not.  More for the benefit of out wallets.

So am I the only badass here that mines with gpu & erupter/folds/shhs/nets all at the same time?! LOL

I just read the article saying that the bitcoin network is now more powerful than the top 500 computers in the world... crazy town.  Figured Id direct a little of that power to a good cause.  Two birds with one stone if you will.
