When I make a new wallet, I make 300 new addresses with it..only takes a few seconds.  Then I back it up after that and you don't have to do it again, as far as I know.  It's my understanding that you only have to back up when you generate a new address and add BTC to it.

Yes, but it's not recommended to use only one address...
With one private key/address are there problem with the remainder? In BitcoinQt is generated a new address for the remainder. Is in Multibit the remainder received by the same address?
I think Multibit generates a new address in case you only have one, but it's shown in the same list, so it doesn't get lost.

It actually sends change back to an EXISTING address so no new private key is generated.
It's not great for privacy but does mean you don't have to make a new backup.

Yes, but it's not recommended to use only one address (for security reasons, so that people can't easily trace your transactions). It's common to create a new address for every new transaction.

Each time you add a new address, currently. Working on HD wallets to fix this at the moment.

I think for the basic bitcoin qt client, you have to backup the wallet every 100 or so transactions. Is this the case for multibit too?
