You don't really need to upgrade to the latest version of every mining algo.

For example with ETH, you can stick with version 9.x even and it runs just as fast as the new version. However due to the Epoch 199 DAG bug you will be forced to upgrade to 11.x since the older versions don't handle the larger DAG files.

With ZEC it was benefitial to upgrade every release because it came with speed increases and most were pretty impressive gains for certain cards.

An algo such as XMR which uses Cryptonight algo, it doesn't really benefit from upgrading to the new version, the speeds were all identical. However one benefit was that if you didn't upgrade you wouldn't have the V7 algo which is what XMR forked to.

I'm not regularly update the software, I like to use the version which is most stable. But I always switch to mine other coins.
This time we dont have much choices but it's really interesting on doing researches which coin give us better ROI during the dump period Cheesy
